아직도 골프는 귀족 스포츠, 배우기 어려운 운동이라는 인식이 강하다. 물론, 필드에 나가려면 적지 않은 비용이 드는 것은 사실이다. 하지만 배우기 어렵다는 인식은 이제 바뀔 때가 된 것 같다. 하루만 레슨을 받아도 필드에서 재밌게 골프를 칠 수 있도록 만들어주는 일명 골프의 신 때갱이, 김태경 대표가 있으니 말이다. 아무리 오래 걸려도 12시간이면, 골프를 이해하고 무리 없이 게임을 할 수 있다고 장담하는 김태경 대표를 만나 그의 노하우와 골프에 대한 잘못된 상식을 알아봤다.

김 대표는 원래 골프를 전문적으로 하던 사람이 아니다. 어떻게 골프의 길에 들어섰을까? 그는 다양한 방송에 출연하며 대한민국 최초, 최연소 사설탐정으로 이름을 알린 인물이다. 그 외에도 몇 가지의 사업을 하며, 성공가도에 들어섰지만 인간관계에 회의감을 느끼고 혼자 할 수 있는 것을 찾다가 골프라는 스포츠에 빠지게 됐다고 한다. 처음 골프를 시작했을 때, 그 역시 다른 사람과 마찬가지로 레슨을 받았다. 하지만 운동을 그다지 즐겨하지 않던 그에게 기존의 레슨방식은 맞지 않았다. 일주일 레슨 후 과감하게 레슨을 그만두고 독학을 시작했다. 연구하고 새로운 자세를 만들어가던 그는 4개월 만에 싱글 핸디캡퍼를 이루게 된다. 사실 4개월 만에 싱글을 했다고 하면 믿지 않는 사람들이 많을 것이다. 하지만 김 대표는 자신이 연구한 자세와 골프의 여러 가지 시스템을 바꿈으로써 이를 가능케 했다고 전했다. 그 핵심에는 골프채를 쥐는 그립의 모양을 바꾸고 자세를 바꾸는데서 시작한다. 처음 골프를 배우면 어드레스 자세부터 시작한다. 보통 팔을 펴고 체중 분배에 신경 쓰며, 다리를 굽히고 허리를 숙이는 자세로 시작된다. 그런 뒤에 몸에 힘을 빼라고 한다. 하지만 위 자세를 완성하는 과정에서 몸에 힘이 들어가는 것은 당연하다. 이에 김 대표는 힘이 들어가는 자세를 주문하고 힘을 빼라고 하는 것이 말이 되냐며 반문했다. 사실 그렇다. 모든 운동이 처음 자세를 잡는 것에 가장 큰 시간을 할애한다. 또 전문가들은 위의 자세에서 힘을 뺄 수 있을지 모르지만 초보자들의 입장에서 처음 경험하는 낯선 자세에서 힘을 빼는 것은 거의 불가능할 수 있다. 이에 김 대표는 자연스럽게 힘을 뺄 수 있는 그만의 자세를 완성했다. 

“골프 레슨법에 문제가 있다고 생각했다. 손가락이 아픈 그립법, 힘을 뺄 수 없는 자세 등으로 골프를 배울수록 자신감이 떨어지는 문제점을 꼭 없애고 싶었다. 만 시간의 법칙이 있는데 누구나 만 시간을 연습하면 그 분야의 달인이 되는 것이다. 하지만 프로골퍼들은 그 이상을 연습하면서도 실수를 한다. 즉, 골프 레슨법에 문제가 있다는 것이고, 기존의 레슨법을 꼭 바꿔 많은 사람들이 골프를 쉬운 운동으로 인식하는 것이 나의 레슨 목적이다.”

골프를 접해보지 못한 초보부터 프로까지 새로운 골프 레슨법 전파
특이한 것이 골프를 전공하지 않고, 4개월의 독학으로 싱글까지 이룬 그에게 프로골퍼들도 다시 배운다는 것이다. 사실 한번 익힌 자세를 무너뜨리고 새롭게 자세를 배우려면 어려움이 따를 것 같지만, 김태경 대표는 때갱이 골프스쿨의 장점으로 어느 누구나 쉽게 자세를 익힐 수 있는 시스템을 강조했다. 또한, 골프를 처음 접하는 사람들의 경우도 지금까지 12시간 이상 레슨을 해본 적이 없다고 한다. 보통 6~7시간이면, 대부분의 사람들이 골프를 익힐 수 있는 충분한 시간이라고 전했다. 레슨 이후에도 당연히 혼자 연습은 해야겠지만 하루면 골프를 어느 정도 마스터 하는 것이다.

“예전에는 골프를 한 번도 쳐본 적 없는 여성분께서 당장 내일 라운딩을 나가야 한다며, 레슨을 부탁했다. 원데이 골프레슨 후 라운딩을 무사히 마친 제자에게 연락이 왔는데 버디를 했다고 하더라. 이는 때갱이 골프스쿨의 시스템이 기존의 레슨과는 전혀 다르기 때문에 가능한 것이다.”

김태경 대표는 골프를 시작하는 사람들에게 한 가지 조언을 했다. 보통 골프를 처음 접할 때 7번 아이언으로 시작하게 되는데, 이것이 문제의 시작이며 드라이버부터 시작해야 많은 사람들이 쉽게 포기하는 우드 3번도 잘 맞게 되고, 아이언을 쉽게 사용할 수 있다고 한다. 또한, 골프를 배울 때 순서가 있다는 것이다. 첫 째 공을 맞추는 것이고, 둘 째 방향을 익히는 것이며, 셋 째 거리를 생각하는 것이라고 한다. 하지만 많은 사람들이 거리를 처음부터 신경 써 골프를 배우다보니 몸에 힘이 들어가고 스코어를 줄이기 힘든 것이라고 강조했다.

더불어 처음부터 장비를 사서 연습을 통해 몸에 익히는 것이 중요하고 골프공을 보게 되면 빈 스윙 때와는 달리 잘 치고, 멀리 보내고 싶은 생각에 오히려 좋지 않은 결과를 낳을 수 있다며 본 스윙 때도 공을 보지 않고 스윙을 하는 것이 중요하다고 밝혔다. 
이렇듯 자신만의 레슨법을 완성해 하루면 누구나 골프를 쉽고 빠르게 익힐 수 있도록 도와주는 김태경 대표는 많은 사람들이 골프를 쉬운 운동으로 인식해 더욱 많은 골프인구가 생기길 바란다고 전했다. 또한, 앞으로 좋은 기회가 있다면 더 많은 사람들을 만날 수 있도록 때갱이 골프스쿨을 확대할 계획이라고 한다.

Many people still think that golf is a sport for nobles and difficult to learn. It is a fact that playing golf takes not a small sum of money but it is not a fact that this sport is hard to learn. It is present Kim Tae-gyung (Ttaegaenhgi, also called god of golf) who enables you to play golf joyously on the green. President Kim Tae-gyung guarantees that 12 hours is enough to make you understand golf and play the game reasonably. We met president Kim Tae-gyung to hear his knowhow and common misunderstandings about golf.

President Kim is not a person who originally played golf by profession. So what made him enter into the career of golf? He became famous as the first and the youngest private detective in Korea appearing on diverse channels of broadcasting. Besides, he made success in doing several businesses, but it is said that feeling doubt about human relations he took into golf in an attempt to find something to do by himself. When he started golf for the first time, he also took lesson as many others do. However, since he was not very fond of sports, the existing method of lesson was unfit. After one week, he dared to give up taking lesson and started teaching himself. In his study and efforts to make a new posture, he achieved a single handicapper in four more months. Making a single in four months wouldn’t sound to be true to many people. But president Kim said it was made possible by his own study of posture and changing many systems of golf. The core begins by changing the form and posture of gripping the golf club. When learning golf for the first time, you must begin with address posture. It usually starts by extending your arms and taking care of the distribution in your weight and with the posture of bending your legs and your waist forward. Then you are asked to relax your body. However, it is natural to have your body unrelaxed in the course of completing the postures above. President Kim asked back if it makes sense to order both an unrelaxed posture and a relaxed body. He is right indeed. All sports take the largest time in setting the initial posture. Besides, experts may become relaxed from the above posture but it can be almost impossible for beginners in an unfamiliar posture they must go through for the first time. Accordingly, president Kim completed the posture of his own making from which one can be relaxed naturally. 

“I thought that there was a problem with the golf lesson. I really wanted to resolve the problems of lowering self-confidence as one learns golf more and more with the gripping causing pain in fingers, and the posture incapable of making you relaxed. There is the law of ten thousand hours, which means that anyone can make an expert in the relevant sphere by practicing for ten thousand hours. However, pro-golfers make mistakes even after practicing more. This means there is a problem with the golf lesson and my purpose of lesson is to make many people recognize golf as an easy sport by necessarily shifting the existing method of lesson.“

It is remarkable that even pro-golfers take this new lesson from him who has achieved a single after four months of teaching himself even without majoring in golf. It may entail difficulty to learn a new posture by breaking the once-habituated posture but president Kim Tae-gyung emphasized the ease of this system for anyone practicing posture as the strength of Ttaegaengi Golf School. Even for case of people who start golf for the first time in life, he said that he has never given lesson for more than twelve hours so far. He explained that for most people, six or seven hours is a sufficient time to practice golf. After the end of lesson it may be necessary to practice alone but you can master golf to a degree in a single day. 

“In the past, a woman who had never played golf asked me for lesson because she had to make a rounding just the next day. After the one-day golf lesson, the student who had successfully finished the rounding reached me and said she had made a birdie putt. It is possible because Ttaegaengi Golf School has a system totally different from the existing lesson.”

President Kim Tae-gyung made a piece of advice for those who is going to take into golf. Usually, in the first contact with golf, people start with No. 7 iron but this is the beginning of the problem and starting with a driver is the way to suit oneself for wood No. 3 many people easily give up with and to use iron easily. 

Besides, in learning golf, there is order to follow. He said that the first is to hit the ball, the second is to practice the direction and the third is considering the distance. However, he emphasized that for many people learning golf from the beginning with care about the distance makes them unrelaxed in the body and difficult to reduce the score. He also clarified that it is important to become familiar to the body through practice by buying the equipment from the start and to make a swing without looking at the ball at the time of main swing because looking at the golf ball can produce rather a worse result in thinking of hitting the ball well and sending it far differently from the time of empty swing. 

President Kim Tae-gyung, who helps anyone practice golf easily and quickly in one day by completing his own method of lesson, said that he hoped for a larger number of golfers by recognizing that golf is an easy sport. He is going to expand Ttaegaengi Golf School in order to meet more people in the future if he has the opportunity.
