As the use of secondary batteries increases, charging technology is gaining traction. Electric vehicles require long charging times, and their operating time is still short. Fast charging technology is being developed for this purpose, but the faster the charging speed, the higher the risk of fire, so it is necessary to develop a breakthrough technology that is safe and fast.
Safe and fast 10-minute charging technology
According to Taewon D&C Division Director Won Je-young, the company’s ultra-fast charger using a multiphase generator with more output than input is a technology that can charge a secondary battery in 10 minutes. In general, to increase the charging current, the charging voltage must be increased, but the overcharging voltage leads to damage to the secondary battery. To solve this problem, the company has developed a technology that calculates the relationship between the charging current and the internal impedance of the secondary battery in real time and supplies power while controlling it, reducing the charging time from 1 hour to 10 hours to 10 minutes. To further prevent fire accidents that occur while charging electric vehicles, the company has installed a program to protect the secondary battery by detecting abnormalities such as overvoltage and overcharging in real time during charging to ensure safety along with charging speed.

A game changer in charging industry
Taewon D&C is working to make this charging technology more proactive in helping people. Division Director Won Je-young has his eye on a charger that can charge electric wheelchairs ultra-fast for the disabled or elderly who have difficulty walking. Local governments are doing a lot to support the mobility rights of people, but there are only a few electric wheelchair charging facilities, causing problems along the way. Even the quick chargers on the market have the disadvantage of taking a long time to charge. The company has developed a charger that can charge an electric wheelchair in 10 minutes, making a significant contribution to the well-being of people with limited mobility. Won said the company is preparing to commercialize a car charger that can charge 10 times faster than conventional car chargers, which will be a game changer in the electric vehicle charging industry, as the technology can be applied not only to electric wheelchairs but also to regular electric vehicles.
