현대차, ‘싼타페 더 프라임’ 출시
중형 SUV 시장의 절대 강자 싼타페가 최고의 안전·편의사양과 한층 고급스러워진 디자인으로 새롭게 탄생했다. 현대자동차(주)는 지난 달 4일 디자인을 개선하고 소비자 선호 사양을 확대 적용한 ‘싼타페 더 프라임(SANTAFE The Prime)’을 출시하고 본격적인 판매에 들어갔다. 현대차는 ‘싼타페 더 프라임’에 질소산화물을 50% 이상 감축하도록 한 환경부의 유로6 배출가스 규제를 만족시키는 친환경 고성능 e-VGT R엔진을 탑재했으며, 운전석 및 동승석 어드밴스드 에어백, 어드밴스드 스마트 크루즈 컨트롤 등 다양한 안전·편의사양을 국산 SUV 최초로 적용했다. 현대차는 ‘싼타페 더 프라임’에 ▲충돌의 심각성에 따라 저압과 고압으로 구분하여 에어백 전개를 제어하고, 동승석에 유아시트를 사용하여 유아를 탑승시킬 때 안전을 위해 동승석 에어백을 미작동 시키는 기능이 적용된 ‘어드밴스드 에어백’ ▲앞 차의 속도 변화에 따라 자동으로 거리와 속도를 유지하며 주행하도록 돕는 ‘어드밴스드 스마트 크루즈 컨트롤(Advanced Smart Cruise Control)’ 등을 국산 SUV 최초로 적용했다. 

또한 차체 보강재를 확대 적용하고 차체 구조를 개선하는 등 미국 스몰오버랩 테스트 최고 등급인 ‘우수(Good)’ 등급을 목표로 안전성을 대폭 개선했다. 현대차는 ‘싼타페 더 프라임’의 외장 디자인에 기존 모델의 세련되고 감각적인 스타일을 유지하면서도 고급스러움을 더하는 요소들을 새롭게 적용했다. 현대차 관계자는 “경쟁 모델 및 수입 SUV의 잇따른 출시에 따른 시장 변화에 대응하기 위해 스타일을 개선하고 첨단 사양을 보강한 ‘싼타페 더 프라임’을 출시하게 되었다”며, “더욱 완성도 높은 디자인, 강화된 안전성능, 프리미엄급 편의사양, 뛰어난 주행성능 등 ‘싼타페 더 프라임’은 SUV의 절대강자 싼타페의 위상을 한 단계 높일 것”이라고 밝혔다. 

현대차, 미국 유력 싱크탱크에 ‘한국연구센터’ 설립
현대자동차 정몽구 회장은 외교부 산하 한국국제교류재단(Korea Foundation, 이하 KF)과 함께 현지시간 지난 달 10일 미국 워싱턴 소재 우드로 윌슨 센터(Woodrow Wilson International Center For Scholars)에서 ‘현대차-KF 한국역사 및 공공정책 연구센터(Hyundai Motor-KF Center for Korean History and Public Policy, 현대차-KF 한국연구센터)’를 설립하기 위해 우드로 윌슨 센터와 공식 후원 협약을 체결했다. 

이날 행사에는 에드 로이스(Ed Royce) 미 하원 외교 위원장, 제인 하먼(Jane Harman) 우드로 윌슨 센터 소장, 안호영 주미한국대사 및 이광국 현대차 워싱턴사무소장, KF 유현석 이사장 등이 참석했다. 우드로 윌슨 센터는 1968년 미국 연방의회가 설립한 공공정책 연구기관으로 외교· 안보 등 다양한 분야를 연구하는 미국의 대표적인 싱크탱크임. 지난해 미국 펜실베니아 대학교에 의해 미국 내 5위, 전 세계 10위 싱크탱크로 선정된 바 있다. 우드로 윌슨 센터 이사회는 토마스 나이즈(Thomas Nides) 전 국무부 부장관, 존 케리(John Kerry) 국무부 장관, 안 던컨 (Arne Duncan) 교육부 장관, 실비아 버웰(Sylvia Mathews Burwell) 보건부 장관 등 정·재계 유력 인사들로 구성돼 있다.

현대차와 한국국제교류재단은 각각 200만달러와 100만 달러씩 모두 300만 달러를 지원해 우드로 윌슨 센터 내에 한국 전문 연구 프로그램을 최초로 개설한다. 우드로 윌슨 센터는 이번 후원으로 센터 내의 다양한 부서와 체계적이고 조직적인 협력을 통해 한국 관련 주요 현안 및 이슈에 관한 정책 연구 활동을 진행할 계획이다. 현대차 관계자는 “이번 후원을 통해 미국 오피니언 리더들을 중심으로 한국 및 한국 기업에 대한 이해의 폭을 더욱 확대하는데 기여할 수 있길 기대한다”고 전했다.

The leader of medium size SUV 'Santa Fe' has been reborn into Santa Fe The Prime with best safety, convenience and sophisticated design on July 4. The Prime is loaded with eco-friendly high efficient 'e-VGT engine which satisfies Euro 6 Emissions Standard (50% reduced nitrogen oxide), 'Advanced Airbag' and 'Advanced Smart Cruise Control' for the first time in domestic SUV. With Advanced Airbag, you can control not to function the airbag of the next seat when a baby seat is installed on the side and the airbag automatically controls according to the level of pressure when the car is crashed. Advanced Smart Cruise Control, on the other hand, maintains the speed and distance in responds to the speed of the car in front automatically. It also strengthened safety measures by adding reinforcing materials to the body alongside improving the main structure. In terms of design, you can feel a sophisticated style with a taste of luxury. An official of Hyundai Motors said "we released Santa Fe The Prime to secure competitiveness in the rapidly changing global SUV market. With its strengthened functions and sophisticated design, we are sure that Santa Fe The Prime will raise the status one more time as the leader of medium size SUV in the market."

Hyundai Motors, establishing 'Korea Research Center' in a prominent think-tank US
Hyundai Motors and Korea Foundation signed a Support Agreement with Willson Center at Woodrow Wilson International Center For Scholars on June 10 in Washington, US to establish 'Hyundai Motor-KF Center for Korean History and Public Policy'. The event was participated by Diplomacy Chairman of Lower House Ed Royce, Head of Willson Center Jane Harman, Korean Ambassador Ahn Ho-young to the US, Lee Gwang-guk, Head of Hyudai Motors Washington Office, and Chief Director Yu Hyeon-suk of Korea Foundation. Willson Center was established in 1968 as a public policy research institute relating to various subjects including diplomacy and national security.

It is a representative think-tank in the US and was ranked No.5 in the US and No.10 in the world by University of Pennsylvania. The center's board of directors are consisted of prominent members in politics and business including Thomas Nide (Former Deputy Secretary of State Department), John Kerry (Secretary of State), Arne Duncan (Minister of Education), and Sylvia Mathews Burwell (Health Minister). Hyundai Motors and Korea Foundation are launching a Korea Specialized Research Program in the center by supporting $3M (Hyundai Motors $2M, Korea Foundation $1M). With this, the center is expected to carry out policy researches relating to current affairs and issues happening in Korea. An official of Hyundail Motors said "we are expecting that the support will contribute to expanding the understanding about Korean culture and enterprises among the opinion leaders in the US."
