안전성과 휴대성 대폭 보완한 완강기의 혁신 '(주)에스엠투'
독자적 기술력으로 다양한 특허 보유해

우리나라의 연간 화재발생 건수는 4만 건 이상으로 그 중에서도 단독주택, 공동주택, 기타주택 등 주거시설에서의 화재발생이 전체의 25% 정도를 차지하는 1만 건 이상이다. 또한 숙박시설 등 업무시설에서의 화재발생 역시 2천 건을 상회한다. 특히 현대화된 생활양식에 따라 나날이 집약적으로 고층화되어가는 현대식 건물들 때문에 화재발생 시 입주자들의 생명에 큰 위험이 될 수 있다. 이러한 고층 건물들에서는 화재를 진압하기 위한 소화기 외에도 외부로의 탈출을 가능하게 하는 완강기 역시 큰 역할을 한다.

기존 완강기 단점 획기적으로 보완한 휴대형 완강기 개발해
항공스텐 와이어, 패드 브레이크 등 다양한 특허 보유해
완강기는 고층건물에서 화재를 만났을 때 몸에 밧줄을 내고 낮은 땅으로 천천히 내려와 탈출을 가능하게 하는 비상용 기구다. 그러나 기존의 완강기는 베란다나 발코니 등에 설치되어 큰 공간을 차지하기 때문에 실질적으로 유지 보수 등에 큰 어려움이 있고, 일부의 경우는 아예 설치를 하지 않고 보관만 하고 있는 경우도 있다. (주)에스엠투의 장사융 대표는 완강기의 단점을 획기적으로 보완한 일체형, 휴대형 완강기를 개발해 주목받고 있다.

기존의 크고 무거운 분리형 완강기의 단점을 보완한 휴대형 완강기를 개발할 수 있었던 것은 장 대표의 끊임없는 탐구와 혁신 덕분이었다. 기존의 제품은 로프의 굵기가 손가락 정도이며 더 높은 층까지 커버하게 되면 굵기 역시 곱절 이상으로 늘어난다. 그러나 에스엠투의 완강기는 항공스텐 와이어를 사용해 인장력을 획기적으로 높이면서도 로프의 부피를 줄였다. 그 뿐 아니라 자동차 벨트와 같은 부속품을 사용해 완강기를 타고 내려가는 과정에서 외벽 구조물에 발이 걸려 뒤집어지는 등 혹시 발생할지 모르는 상황에 대비했다. 뿐만 아니라 브레이크를 통해 속도를 조절하며 내려올 수 있다는 장점도 있다.

제품과 관련한 특허 역시 에스엠투의 기술력을 반증해주고 있다. 자동차 타이어와 유사한 방식으로 제품 내부에 패드를 사용해 속도를 조절할 수 있는 브레이크, 로프를 풀고 되감을 때 반대 방향으로 로프를 붙잡을 수 있는 내부 베어링, 평소에는 고정되어 있지만 역방향 장치를 감을 때만 사용할 수 있는 손잡이 등 에스엠투는 다양한 특허를 인정받아 완강기 제조의 혁신을 이뤄가고 있다.

"현실에 맞지 않는 소방 관련 규제 조속히 보완해야"
사람의 생명을 구하는 완강기의 혁신
2001년 전세계를 떠들썩하게 한 9.11 사건을 보고 "사람의 생명을 구할 수 있는 제품을 만들어야겠다"는 결심을 했다는 장 대표는 "현재 소방 관련 법규를 관장하는 것은 행정안전부 안전처 산하 한국소방안전기술원이다. 그러나 규정이 만들어진 지 30년이 가까워 가고 현실과 맞지 않는 규제들이 많다"고 이야기하며 10층 이상 건물에도 완강기를 설치하는 법안이 하루 빨리 통과되기를 기원했다. 그는 "최근 당국이 완강기 사용하중을 1000N에서 1500N으로 올렸는데 안전벨트는 6500N, 감속장치는 3900N이다. 사실상 줄이 끊어지면 쓸 수 없는 것임에도 각각 다른 기준을 적용하는 것은 이해하기 어렵다. 또 1500N의 강도를 버틸 수 있음에도 로프 굵기의 기준인 3mm를 충족하지 못하면 제품 개발이 어렵다. 마지막으로 제품 승인 기간이 45일인데, 하루 속히 개정이 돼야 빠른 연구 개발을 할 수 있다"고 이야기하며 당국의 관심을 촉구했다.

장 대표는 "대부분의 인간은 태어나서 죽을 때까지 자기만 위하다가 죽는다. 실질적으로 남을 위해서 뭔가 만들려고 하는 사람은 극히 일부다. 비행기, 기차, 자동차, 전기 등을 만든 한 사람 한 사람이 있었기 때문에 지금의 상황이 가능했다. 나 역시 남을 위해 한 가지는 만들어놓고 싶은 마음으로 시작한 것이다. 앞으로 사람의 목숨을 구하는 완강기의 혁신을 통해 더 많은 사람들에게 도움이 되겠다"며 자신의 포부를 이야기했다. 주변의 지극히 사소한 것에서 출발해 커다란 혁신을 이뤄가는 (주)에스엠투 장사융 대표는 앞으로 국내 창조경제의 든든한 일원으로서 본인의 역할을 다해 나갈 것이다.

A descending device enables a person to escape a building on fire through a rope. But many existing products took a lot of space in veranda which make it tiresome to maintain and repair and some people do not even install the device for this reason. For this, Jang Sa-yeong, CEO of SM2, developed an innovative portable descending device. The existing products were bulky and the rope was very thick if it is to be used in a tall building. Jang's, on the other hand, reduced thickness of the rope significantly while increasing tensile force by using an aviation sten wire and a car seat belt to prevent the person getting up-side down by a leg caught on the things of wall. You can also adjust the speed by using a pad brake, hold the opposite rope when you roll it up and down by using an internal bearing, and the handle grip (basically fixed) can be used when you roll up the device to reverse direction. These are all patented technologies Jang developed. 

"Impractical safety regulation need to be improved urgently"
An innovation of descending device that saves lives
Jang decided to develop a device to save people when watching 9.11 on TV. Then he also felt a need to improve current safety regulation. Jang said "the current safety regulation was made 30 years ago by Korea Institute of Fire Safety affiliated to Ministry of Government Administration & Home Affairs. But there are many elements that are not practical or reflect new social structure. I hope that the regulation need to be improved for descending device to be also used more than a 10 storey building", adding that "the department recently raise the working load of descending device from 1000N to 1500N but safety belt is 6500N and reduction gear 3900N. This is nonsense as the rope likely to be cut but they apply inconsistent standards. Also, even though the rope is designed for 1500N, we cannot develop a product unless it does not satisfy the standard of 3mm rope regardless its kind and materials we use. In addition, the approval period for new product takes 45 days but this is too long for us to carry out a speedy R&D and registration." Jang continued "most people live selfish until they die. Only a few people try to make something to save lives. We can use airplanes, trains, cars and electricity because there were people who developed these. Therefore, I want to be one of them and contribute to saving lives through developing innovative descending devices."
