Prof. Yabg-Ick Joo of Electronics and Electrical Information Engineering at Korea Maritime and Ocean University
Commercializing LTE terminal for the first time in the world
Information technology gives us convenience in life. Korea’s wireless mobile communication technology has grown to be one of the top in the world and is leading the industry at the moment. Prof. Yabg-Ick Joo of Electronics and Electrical Information Engineering at Korea Maritime and Ocean University is a specialist in the field who has wide knowledge and development experience. Until he started to work as an assistant professor in 2012, Joo worked for Samsung Electronics’ DMC Lab for 8 years and participated in all the processes from establishment of international standard to commercialization (preceeding stage before the development of LTE communication system). He contributed to suggesting LTE standard at 3GPP LTE International Standard Meeting and obtaining several international patents. Prof.
Joo says “Obtaining patents is most important when a new technology has appeared. Because whether it be the standard or not gives the power of leading the subsequent development.” Joo and his team commercialized LTE terminal for the first time in the world and introduced ‘LTE modem software’ which soon applied to mobile phones and they contributed to the export of Korea’s LTE mobile phones to the world. Especially, Joo exerted his effort in developing effective algorithm that is needed for realization of the system and published research papers on world renowned academic journals. For his contribution, Joo has been listed in Marquis Who’s Who 2016.
Prof. Joo continues his research to marine & disaster communication
Joo’s abundant field knowhow and professional knowledge are widely used in universities and research institutes. Currently, Joo is focusing on wireless resource management and wireless medium access control based on various wireless communication systems. He particularly pays attention to distributed networks rather than the existing centralized network like cellular network. Porf. Joo says “I’m working on algorithm development of efficient measurement and handover to LTE small cells, distributed medium access control schemes for UWB and RFID, and colliding prevention measures between autonomous vehicles on vehicle communication system.
Based on the results of these researches, I’m going to carry out LTE-based marine & disaster communication research in near future.” Joo is also working on ati-collision methods to solve the problems caused by drones by using vehicle & mobile communication systems in his Wireless Communication Laboratory. Joo says “Many processes are needed for a new technology to be commercialized which often involve various unexpected problems. For this reason, we need in-depth examinations on actualization of practical designs and systems as theories can be nothing but theories without proving.” Joo’s goal is to combine wireless communication, industry and academic world so that together they can produce more substantial results and applications.
