Dongnae Market is Busan’s first traditional market mentioned in ‘Donggukmunheonbigo’ which is an encyclopedia of Korean culture and products published in 1770. It became the largest market in Busan by the end of the Joseon Dynasty and has led regional economy and connected residents to residents. However, the market experienced reduced number of visitors and a decline in sales. But under the leadership of Director Youngsam Kim of Dongnae Market Promotion Agency, it has turned over a new leaf by maximizing its history and tradition but with new concept and design of culture & experience-based market. Kim benchmarked the marketing strategy of traditional markets which consisted of history, culture and experience when he studied in Japan. Kim unraveled those elements of Dongnae Market through a form of storytelling covering past, present and future.
Kim says “Our project has been chosen for ‘Culture & Tourism Market Promotion Project’ by Small & Medium Business Administration, and Small Enterprise and Market Service. We tried to reproduce the 19th century Dongnae Market by installing traditional roof tiles and hanging traditional Korean lanterns here and there as well as improving the overall surface of the market in modern terms.”
Encounter of tradition and modernity that touches many hearts of people
Apart from his director’s role, Kim is also serving as an assistant professor of Industrial Design at Dongeui University. He installed DID in various places in the market to provide various information for market traders and introduced a smart phone app where people can easily find what is where as well as news of the market. Early this year, he painted a mural of Joseon Dynasty on the outer walls, installed LED signboard at various entrances and air-conditioners, and refurbished the ceilings. To make the most of the local specialty ‘Dongnae Pancake’, Kim has been holding ‘Fusion Pancake Competition’ in May every year and the winners’ pancakes are sold at the special fusion pancake booths to attract more tourists. Kim says “Differentiated strategy is needed for traditional market to secure competitiveness as well as efficient management system. We will do our best to promote Dongnae Market to be a role model for many other traditional markets in Korea.”
