Micro Grid, the next generation electricity supplying system
The government recently announced investment plan to support Micro Grid in the hope of introducing more energy efficient systems in Korea. For this, the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning appointed Pusan National University for ‘2015 Energy Specialists Promotion Project’ and they support $1.7M project expenses for the university to carry out Micro Grid related R&D and fostering talented students in masters and PhDs for the next 5 years. Director Juneho Park of Pusan National University Energy Specialists Promotion Center says “Micro Grid is regarded as the next generation electricity supplying system model in the smart grid field. Micro Grid is expected to grow to be $10B in the global market by 2020 and can create a new energy industry.”
Micro Grid System means that it uses solar cells, wind power, energy storage system and diesel generators for efficient energy consumption and it also provides self-sufficient electricity to small or remote areas. The system can do optimal use of electricity if applied with cogeneration system, can minimize energy bills, do peak reduction and show realtime electricity rate when applied with dispersed power generation and energy storage system. Director Park says “Micro Grid technology can reduce energy bills when used in large buildings and factories as it reduces the peak value of electric demand and you can keep running the electricity even if Kepco system has problems in supplying electricity.”
Fostering talented students who will lead global market
Recently, the government has made investment in Micro Grid related technology development through ‘Eco-friendly Energy Independence Town Project’ and ‘Seoul National University Micro Grid System Project’. Director Park says “Most remote areas are provided electricity based on diesel generators which cost residents an arm and a leg due to high oil price and logistics. Installing Micro Grid in those areas for this reason can significantly reduce overall energy costs and bills.” Fostering talented students in the field also is very important. As the development of related technology is on its initial stage, securing talented manpower can directly lead to national and market competitiveness. Park adds “Korea’s hardware technology has become global level but software and electric energy system still need many improvement.” Power Korea hopes Park and the team will take a great part in contribution to development of the Korean Micro Grid technology.
