통합교육과 문화예술 활동으로 사회적응력 향상에 주력하다

지난 10월 21일, 부산광역시학생예술문화회관에서는 부산혜원학교 창립 50주년을 기념하는 정기연주회가 열렸다. 부산혜원학교가 주최하고 교육부, 부산광역시교육청, BNK부산은행, MBC 아카데미뷰티스쿨, 초록우산재단, 김은혜사랑나눔재단이 후원하는 이 행사에서는 부산베데스다합창단과 부산베데스다윈드오케스트라가 관객들에게 아름다운 음악을 선보이며 커다란 감동을 선사했다. 

꿈과 희망이 자라는 학교
지난 1965년 설립된 부산혜원학교는 부산 특수교육의 시발점이자 우리나라 특수교육을 이끌고 있는 작지만 강한 학교로 평가받고 있다. 비록 외형은 작지만 영아반과 유치부, 초·중·고등학교와 전공과 과정까지 갖춰 종합학교로서의 탄탄한 내실을 자랑하는 부산혜원학교는 특히 장애 영아에 대한 빠른 교육적 접근을 통해 교육부재시 발생할 수 있는 여러 문제를 방지하는 데에 최선의 노력을 다하고 있다. 부산혜원학교의 윤성현 교장은 “저희는 장애를 이기며 가진 능력을 최대한 향상시켜 사회에 적응하고, 자립·자활할 수 있는 생활인을 길러내는 것을 목표로 다양한 사회적응활동과 인성 및 진로지도에 중점을 둔 교육을 펼치고 있습니다. 또한 전공과와 진로직업교육을 통해 지역사회 장애학생들에 대한 조기교육 및 전환교육의 선도적인 역할을 수행하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 부산혜원학교는 각 학생들의 특성에 맞는 직업교육을 통해 사회에서 당당히 직업을 가지고 생활할 수 있도록 지도하는 데에 주력하고 있다. 아울러 심화교육이 필요한 학생의 경우에는 전공과에 입학하여 최대 2년간 직업중점 교육을 받을 수 있도록 돕고 있다.

부산혜원학교가 실시한 교육 프로그램 중 가장 대표적인 것은 2006년 전국에서 처음으로 실시한 ‘방학 없는 학교’ 프로그램이다. 윤성현 교장은 “자기 주도적으로 무언가를 하기 어려운  본교 장애학생들에게 방학은 즐거움이 아니라 고통인 경우가 많았습니다. 가정에서는 양육을 위한 부담도 상당했고요, 학생들에게 방학에도 즐거움을 주고 싶었고 학부모의 부담을 조금이라도 줄이고자 이러한 프로그램을 기획하고 시작하였습니다.”라고 설명했다. 이렇게 시행된 방학 중 등교프로그램은 사회적으로도 큰 반향을 일으키며 현재에는 전국적으로 확대되어 실시되고 있다.

모두가 하나 되는 음악의 힘
부산혜원학교의 특별한 점 중 하나는 장애학생의 문화·예술교육에 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다는 것이다. 2009년부터 운영되고 있는 ‘장애 없는 합창단’ 부산베데스다합창단은 환경적인 장애를 최소화하고 다양한 지원으로 장애인과 비장애인이 차별 없이 활동하고 있어 장애에 대한 잘못된 인식과 차별을 철폐하는 모범사례로 손꼽혀왔다. 그간 3번의 정기연주회와 KBS전국민합창대회 특별출연, 부산아이파크축구단·롯데자이언트야구단 홈경기 축가 및 애국가 연주, 세종문화회관 협연(Music In The Dark) 등 그 활동의 범위를 점점 넓혀가고 있다. 특히 지난 2012년에는 오페라 춘향전을 무대에 올려 교육계와 지역음악계에 감동을 선사했다는 평을 받았으며, 2014년 7월에는 전국지적장애인합창대회에서 대상인 보건복지부장관상을 수상하기도 했다. 윤 교장은 “부산베데스다합창단은 장애인들이 문화예술 분야에서도 일자리를 창출할 수 있다는 희망을 선사하고 있습니다. 그리고 이러한 노력은 지난 2014년 ‘교육부 지정 학생오케스트라 사업’ 선정에 따른 부산베데스다 윈드오케스트라 창단으로도 이어졌습니다”라고 밝혔다. 

흔히 음악에는 사람과 사람 사이를 이어주는 힘이 있다고 말한다. 말이나 글로는 전하기 어려웠던 감정들을 우리는 음악을 통해 공유할 수 있으며, 사회적인 편견을 넘어 서로를 깊이 이해할 수 있도록 도와준다. ‘음악’이라는 언어가 가진 힘으로 세상을 변화시키고 있는 부산혜원학교의 노력이 사람들의 얼어붙은 마음을 조금씩 따뜻한 빛으로 물들여가기를 기대한다.

The school that gives dream and hope
Established in 1965, Busan Hyewon School is the initiator of special-education schools in Korea and has provided excellent education for physically and mentally impaired students. Although it is a relatively small school, it provides all the courses necessary for preschool, elementary, middle and high schools. Principal Yoon says “We try to maximize students’ abilities so that they can take part in the society as a member through various specialized programs such as personality, independence, career path and vacational training in addition to basic subjects.” For those who need in-depth education are provided with the intensive 2 year vocational training course. The school introduced ‘No Vacation Program’ in 2006 for the first time in Korea. Principal Yoon explains “As they are not normal students, summer or winter breaks are rather hard time for them to do self-directed learning at home. Families also worry about rearing them by themselves alone. That’s why we introduced the program to take care of our students throughout the year.” As a result, more and more schools are following the program.

One for all and all for one
Apart from basic curriculum and vocational training, Busan Hyewon School is actively promoting culture and art programs for students. The school has been running Busan Bethesda Choir since 2009. Both students and normal people are the members of the choir and it is highly praised by many people and organizations for improving public recognition about disabilities and discriminations. The choir has held three regular concerts, participated in KBS National Choir Competition as a special guest, sang a celebratory song and the national anthem at home games of Busan Ipark and Lotte Giants and gave an accompanied performance in Music In The Dark held at the Sejong Center for Performing Arts. The choir also surprised the music and educational world by producing and making opera Chunhyangjeon (Korean opera) and winning the Ministerial Prize from the Ministry of Health & Welfare at the National Intellectual Disabilities Choir Competition in July 2014. Yoon says “The choir actually proved that physically and mentally impaired people can also create jobs. Our effort was also recognized as we were chosen for ‘Ministry of Education’s Student Orchestra Project’ in 2014. Encouraged by this, we formed yet another choir; Busan Bethesda Wind Orchestra.” Some say that music connects us each other. We can deliver and share emotions otherwise difficult in words with music.
