경북공업고등학교는 1955년에 개교, 올해로 60주년을 맞이한 유서 깊은 명문 고등학교이다. 1968년에는 세계기능올림픽대회에서 은메달을 수상한 바 있으며, 1977년 전국기능올림픽대회 금메달, 1984년 세계청소년선수권대회 입상 등 경북공고는 대한민국 경제의 태동기에 뚜렷한 족적을 남기며 경제발전을 이끌어 나갈 주역을 양성해왔다.

수준 높은 직업교육 펼치는 공업 특성화 고등학교
‘새로운 역사를 창조하는 일꾼이 되자’는 교훈으로 개교한 경북공업고등학교는 인성과 실력을 겸비한 창의적 기술 인재 양성을 목표로 하는 사립 특성화 고등학교이다. 이미 오랜 역사 속에 공업 분야의 주역으로 활동할 인재들을 수없이 배출해온 경북공고는 최근에는 지식정보화 시대에 발맞춰, 시대가 필요로 하는 창의적이고 능동적인 인재를 육성하고자 차별화된 학교경영전략을 추진하고 있다. 이종환 교장은 “지식정보화 사회에서의 중심 가치는 물질적인 것보다는 무형적인 것, 즉 우수한 역량을 갖춘 인재에 있습니다. 이에 저희 학교에서는 전문지식과 실무역량, 올바른 인성과 창의력을 겸비한 창의융합형 기술인을 배출하기 위한 교육에 매진하고 있습니다”라고 전했다.

경북공고는 건축그래픽디자인과, 전자기계과, 패션신소재설계과, 디스플레이화학공업과, 토목설계과, 전자전기과를 갖추고 있으며, 우수학생 해외연수 및 국제교류 활동, 관련 자격증 취득과 취업동아리 활동 지원 등을 통해 각 학과별 경쟁력 향상에 심혈을 기울이고 있다. 경북공고의 이러한 노력은 중소기업청 및 교육부에서 주관하는 다양한 정책 프로젝트 선정으로 더욱 탄력을 받고 있다. 현재 경북공고는 중소기업청 주관의 특성화고 인력양성사업과 기술사관 육성프로그램을 진행하고 있으며, 교육부의 특성화고 취업역량강화사업, 취업지원 인력지원사업, 취업보장형 고교-전문대 통합교육 육성사업(Uni-Tech), 산학일체형도제학교에 선정되어 사업을 추진하고 있다.

맞춤형 진로지도로 높은 취업률 달성
경북공고는 특성화고등학교 가운데서도 눈에 띌 정도로 높은 취업률과 함께 취업의 질 또한 우수해 높은 평가를 받고 있다. 실제 올해 초 졸업한 학생들은 대구도시철도공사, 한국전기안전공사, KT&G, 울산항만공사, 한국남동발전 등의 공기업 및 공공기관과 함께 삼성전자, 현대모비스, 롯데케미칼, 롯데건설, 대우조선해양, 삼성에스원, 삼성메디슨 등 대기업, 중견기업으로의 취업에도 성공하며 뛰어난 성과를 창출한 바 있다. 이종환 교장은 “실제 취업 과정에서 가장 중요한 것은 학생들이 스스로 자신의 꿈과 목표를 수립하고, 그것에 맞게 구체적인 실천계획을 세우는 것입니다. 저희는 학생들이 충분한 시간을 갖고 자신의 진로와 적성을 탐색하며, 이를 준비할 수 있도록 최선을 다해 돕고자 합니다”라고 밝혔다. 이에 경북공고에서는 기술사관 프로그램, 취업보장형 고교-전문대 통합교육 육성사업을 통해 대학진학과 취업을 동시에 해결할 수 있도록 역량을 키우는 한편, 체계적인 학생 맞춤형 진로지도로 취업 및 진학을 위한 전략적인 컨설팅도 제공하고 있다. 또한 관련 업체와의 협약을 통해 학생들에게 가능성과 기회의 문을 열어주는 데에 주력하고 있다.

경북공고의 특별한 경쟁력은 각종 대회 수상 경력으로도 잘 나타난다. 경북공고는 2015 대구기능경기대회, 제50회 전국기능경기대회 등 출전 전 종목에서 메달을 다수 확보하는 등 우수한 성적을 거뒀으며, KBS <스카우트> 한국전기안전공사, 한국철도시설공단 편에서 최종 2회 우승, 제15회 2.28민주운동 전국글짓기대회 단체 교육감표창, 제43회 문화체육관광부장관배 전국레슬링대회 3연패 달성 등의 성적을 기록하기도 했다. 이종환 교장은 “저희는 학생들이 즐겁고 꿈과 끼를 살리는 학교, 안전하고 쾌적한 학교, 학생·학부모·교사가 행복한 학교를 만들고자 합니다”라고 말했다. 청소년의 꿈이 현실이 되는 학교를 만들어나가고 있는 경북공업고등학교가 대한민국의 산업발전을 이끌 우수한 인재 배출의 요람이 되어주기를 바란다.

A specialized high school that provides high level vocational training
Under the school motto ‘We Create A New History’, Gyeongbuk Technical High School was opened its door in 1955 and has fostered talented students who have a right personality and skills. In order to follow up the current information and technology centric society, Principal Lee has launched an innovative and differentiated school management. Lee says “The important thing in this day and age is to foster students who are equipped with excellent work capacity in each field. For this reason, we are focusing on industry-oriented programs in addition to the basic personality education.” The school runs various subjects including Architectural Graphic & Design, Electro Mechanic, New Fashion Material Design, Display Chemical Industry, Civil Engineering Design and Electricity & Electronics. Principal Lee supports students for overseas training, international exchange, obtaining qualifications and club activities. Many of the school programs were chosen for numerous projects by the Small & Medium Business Administration and the Ministry of Education. Currently, the school is carrying out Specialized High School Talent Promotion Project and Technological Development Project managed by the Small & Medium Business Administration and Specialized High School Employment Project, Job Support Project, Uni-Tech Project (guaranteed job program) and Industry-Academic Apprentice Project managed by the Ministry of Education. 

Achieving high employment rate through customized career consultation
Gyeongbuk Technical High School boasts high employment rate at quality jobs. Many of the graduates are working for Daegu Metropolitan Transit Corporation, Korea Electrical Safety Corporation, KT&G, Ulsan Port Authority, Korea Electric Power Corporation, Samsung, Hyudai, Lotte Chemicals, Lotte Engineering & Construction, DSME, S-1 Corporation and Samsung Medicine. Principal Lee says “The most important thing is that students need to set up their own goal and plan and work hard. For our part, we provide our utmost effort in helping them achieve their goal.” The school helps students to secure a job the moment they enter a university (Uni-Tech Project) and provides customized and strategic career consultation.

Gyeongbuk Technical High School won numerous prizes including ‘2015 Daegu Skills Competition’ and ‘The 50th National Skills Competition’ in all competing areas, the grand prize at ‘KBS <Scout>: Korea Rail Network Authority’ in last February, ‘Ministerial Citation of Ministry of Education at The 15th 2.28 Democratica Movement National Writing Skills’ and ‘The 43th Ministry of Culture, Sport & Tourism National Wrestling Competition’ for three times. Principal Lee says “We are working really hard to make a better, safer and practical school and we will do our best to be the top specialized high school in Korea.”
