지난 1월 22일, (주)여민기술연구소는 몽골의 석탄 가공 및 공급 업체인 몬치모와 ‘클린석탄’ 생산을 위한 기술협력 계약을 체결하며 화제를 모았다. 이번 계약으로 여민기술연구소는 기존 석탄연료 사용으로 인한 대기오염 물질 배출을 억제하는 생산 기술을 제공하며, 몬치모가 몽골 내에서 클린석탄을 가공하는 과정을 적극 지원하게 된다. 여민기술연구소는 이번에 추진되는 몽골 진출을 시작으로 향후 5년 간 생산설비 2억 달러, 기술료 2천 5백만 달러 이상의 매출을 달성할 것으로 기대하고 있으며, 연간 4천만 톤 생산 규모를 지닌 몽골 전 지역 탄광에 클린석탄 기술 및 설비 수출을 목표로 사업을 추진할 계획이다. 그간 국내에서 청정에너지개발에 끊임없는 노력을 기울여 왔던 여민기술연구소의 본격적인 해외시장 진출이 이제 꽃을 피우기 시작한 것이다.

각종 천연소재 개발에 성공, 내실 있는 여민기술연구소의 지난 한 해

이광원연구소장은 지난해 자연의 쓰레기를 녹탄화하는 기술개발에 성공한 데에 이어 대기오염물질 및 일산화탄소 발생을 획기적으로 줄이면서도 더욱 많은 열량을 낼 수 있는 석탄 처리 기술 및 관련 천연소재 개발에 성공하는 등 국내 어느 기업보다도 내실 있는 시간을 보냈다. 주요 키워드인 천연 복합 신소재를 간단히 정의하면 석탄 자체에서 물리적, 화학적 반응을 일으키는 물질로 석탄이 함유하고 있는 유해물질을 파괴 및 변형하여 각종 대기오염물질, 그을음, 악취발생을 줄이는 역할을 한다. 따라서 이 신소재를 적용한 클린석탄 가공전용 설비만으로도 오염방지와 열효율이라는 두 가지 목표를 한 번에 달성할 수 있는 셈이다.

“연구개발 컨트롤타워 설립 필요성 점차 커져”

여민기술연구소의 이광원 연구소장은 “물리적, 화학적으로 불가능하다고 여기는 기술개발이 가능함을 보여주고 싶었다”라며 소감을 전했다. “다양한 아이디어들이 창출되고 그 아이디어들이 성장하는 연구개발 전문기업이 되는 것이 저희 연구소가 꿈꾸는 가장 큰 모토입니다. 이번에 개발된 녹탄과 클린석탄에 이어, 향후 발표되는 기술개발 제품은 배추 등 각종 야채를 아주 잘게 자를 수 있는 분쇄기를 비롯하여 농작물, 의류 등 저온에서도 빠르고 골고루 원하는 수준까지 건조시킬 수 있는 농산물용 건조기 및 의료건조기, 식품을 오랫동안 보관해도 신선도를 그대로 유지할 뿐만 아니라 과일 종류의 당분 성분을 높여주는 Bio Paper 종이박스, 산패가 쉽게 되지 않는 프리미엄 식용유, 부피의 100배까지 실내 습기를 빨아들여 보관하다 햇빛에 노출되면 순식간에 습기가 제거되는 소재 및 음식물, 하수슬러지 등에서 뿜어내는 악취제거 기술 등 각종 신개념 기술개발 결과물들이 곧 발표될 예정입니다”

또한, 향후 국내외 유일의 연구개발 전문 컨트롤타워를 설립하여 국내외의 필요기술 개발 및 보급에 더욱 심혈을 기울이고 싶다는 그의 바람을 통해 현재 몸담고 있는 여민기술연구소가 어떠한 방향을 꿈꾸고 있는지 쉽게 짐작할 수 있었다.

물론 기술개발을 진행하며 순탄한 과정만이 있었던 것은 아니었다. 이 소장은 신기술 개발을 한 이후, 사업화・활성화하고자 하는 많은 과정들을 거칠 때마다 기술누출 및 보호를 하는 것에 더욱 신중하고도 조심스러운 자세로 임해야 했다. 반대로 비용에 상관없이 중소기업의 낙후된 설비를 개선한 후 업체 측에서 생산성이 무척이나 향상됐다며 고마움을 전하는 피드백이 올 때마다 여민기술연구소의 가족들은 가장 보람을 느낀다고 한다. “저는 사람과 상품에 대한 신뢰를 가장 중시하는 편입니다. 또한 대나무와 같이 어떠한 태풍, 강풍, 추위 속에서도 더욱 강인하게 생존함을 보여주는 것이 삶의 철학으로 제가 하게 된 일에 자부심을 느끼며 기술개발에 더욱 전념하는 것만이 저의 소명이라 생각하고 있습니다.”

안타까운 대한민국의 현실, 기술개발 문화정착 더욱 공고히 해야

이광원 소장은 특히 과학기술 분야를 매우 중요시하면서도 막상 실천에서 머뭇거리는 대한민국의 현실에 안타까운 마음을 표시했다. “제가 아는 많은 과학기술인들이 중요한 기술개발을 해놓고도 국내에서 꽃피우지 못한 채, 해외로 기술이전을 하고 생활하시는 분들이 많습니다. 이 분들의 공통점은 국내에서 개발한 기술들이 인정받지 못하고 사업화에 따른 각종 규제 및 자금에 대한 장벽이 높아 극복하지 못하고 어려움을 겪는 것입니다. 동종업계에 몸담고 있는 동료로서 그 절실함을 알기에 환경 또는 자금력이 뒷받침되지 못한 채, 국내를 떠나는 경우가 제일 안타깝습니다.” 이에, 여민기술연구소는 과학기술개발을 할 수 있는 문화정착이 가장 시급하다는 명제 아래 향후 과학기술영재원을 설립할 예정이다. 가정형편이 어려운 청소년을 대상으로 과학기술 영재들을 발굴하여 체계적인 과학도를 육성하는 것이 차후 국가・국민의 발전을 위한, 매우 중요한 일이라고 판단한 것이다.

이 소장은 마지막으로 “기술개발에 몸담고 있으며 우리나라의 미래는 결국 과학기술에 달려있다는 생각을 갖게 되었습니다. 많은 개인 또는 중소기업의 과학기술인들이 우대받고 안정적으로 개발할 수 있는 풍토가 조성된다면 저는 더 이상 바랄 것이 없습니다”라고 말했다.

Director Lee Kwang-won of Yeomin Technology Institute achieved a great success in turning natural waste to Noktan last year. He also developed coal processing technology and natural resource with which he can produce more energy while reducing pollutant and carbon monoxide significantly. The development of this new composite material provokes a physical and chemical reaction on coals and destroys or transforms harmful substance in coals to produce less smoke, odor and air pollutants. It means that this new composite material-applied processing facility can generate energy without pollution.

Development of Noktan, clean coal, medical dryer and premium cooking oil

Lee says "I wanted to prove myself that unachievable development can be achieved and I actually did it. I had an idea, carried out research and put it into practice to make something new. I want to develop Yeomin Technology Institute to be a leading R&D specialized company built on this process. We developed Noktan and clean coal. And we will develop shredder for vegetable, agricultural dryer that can dry farm products faster in low temperature, medical dryer, bio paper box that keeps freshness and increasing sugar, premium cooking oil, moisture absorber that absorbs moisture 100 times better and releases it when in the sun, and sink & sewer odor remover in the near future." Lee also wants to build Korea's first R&D-specialized control tower to develop and distribute necessary technologies home and abroad. But Lee takes utmost care in terms of commercialization and protection of the developed technologies. And the researchers of Yeomin Technology Institute feel really worth whenever SMEs show a gratitude for the institute's service for improving their facilities and productivity. Lee says "I value trust in people and product the most. I'm really proud of myself and of what I have achieved and I think it is my mission to carry on technology development."

"Korea needs to push forward technology development"

Lee feels regretful that Korea values science technology very high but rather hesitates in its practice. Lee says "I know many scientists who developed fantastic technologies but many of them transferred them to overseas countries due to lack of recognition, unpractical regulation and not enough investment in Korea. As a colleague of them, I can't help but sympathizing them." To improve the situation, Lee is planning to establish a science technology institute for gifted students who are in financial need. Lee concluded "I strongly believe that the future of Korea depends on science technology. And I hope scientists are more recognized in Korea."
