세계적으로 두뇌 연구에 대한 열풍이 거세다. 하버드 대학교는 올해 초 미국의 15개 정보기관을 총괄하는 최고 정보기관인 미국국가정보국 IARPA(The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity)로부터의 투자금을 확보하여 ‘포유류의 두뇌가 학습에 특히 탁월한 이유’를 규명하기 위한 관련 분야 연구를 도모하게 되었다. 나노 소재가 발명되고 태양계 전체로 무인우주선을 보내는 지금까지도 인간의 뇌는 명확히 규명되지 않은 미지의 공간이다. 그렇기 때문에 일상 속에서 두뇌의 여러 가지 사항들을 파악하고 대처할 수 있는 뇌 전문 클리닉의 중요성이 날로 높아지고 있다고 할 수 있다.

ADHD, 틱장애, 불안장애, 난독증 등 흔히 정신질환의 일부로 알려진 증상들은 특히 아동기에 시작되는 경우가 많다. 특히 성장기 어린이들의 경우 이러한 장애가 사회성 및 학습능력의 저하로 연결될 수 있어 부모는 더욱 마음을 졸이게 된다. 한편, 최근에는 성인 ADHD와 틱장애 등 보다 폭넓은 부문에서 그 질환의 중요성을 몸소 느끼고 있어 보다 전문적인 진료의 필요성이 갈수록 커지고 있다. 서울 강남역에서 수인재한의원을 운영하는 안상훈 원장은 경희대학교 한의학과를 졸업하고 정신과 전공으로 박사학위를 취득하고 연세대학교 교육대학원 석사과정을 졸업, 서울대학교 대학원 인지과학 협동과정 박사과정을 수료하며 여러 분야의 학문적 장점을 통합한 진료를 진행하고 있다.

안 원장은 국내에 틱장애라는 질환이 잘 알려지지도 않았던 초등학교 시절 틱장애를 겪었던 적이 있고, 그 경험을 바탕으로 피나는 노력 끝에 지금의 진로를 선택했는데 그 이유 역시 ‘사람의 뇌를 탐구해보고 싶다’는 것이었다. 수인재한의원은 ADHD와 틱장애 등 치료 과정에서 간과 쓸개, 심장의 약한 기운을 보강하고 담(痰: 노폐물)을 없애 스트레스를 견디는 힘과 정신작용이 강해지도록 하는 한약을 처방한다. 이 한약은 중금속과 잔류농약 검사를 통과한 청정한약재를 사용할 뿐 아니라 장기간 복용해도 간에 부담이 없는 순한 약물을 처방한다. 안 원장은 “수인재 한의원에 쓰는 약재를 직접 가족들에게도 먹이고 있으며, ‘환자도 곧 내 가족이다’라는 생각을 가지고 진료와 상담을 하고 있다. 저 역시 틱장애를 겪었던 경험이 있기에 아이와 부모들이 어떤 고통을 겪고 있을 지 짐작할 수 있다”고 말했다.

Continuous R&D in the field
ADHD, tic disorder, anxiety disorder and dyslexia are known to be part of mental disease commonly occur to children. They lower the children's sociability and learning ability and the related R&D is actively carried out in the hope of introducing more effective treatment methods. Director Ahn Sang-hoon of Suinjae Oriental Medicine (located near Gangnam Station) majored in oriental medicine at Kyunghee University, obtained a PhD in psychiatry and finished a master's course at Yonsei University Graduate School of Education. He also finished a PhD course in cognitive science at Seoul National University. Ahn is famous for his treatment that combined oriental medicine with brain science and psychology.

Ahn suffered from tic disorder when he was a child. He naturally had become motivated to better understand the disorder and human brain as he grew up. After years of study in the field, Ahn introduced herbal medicine which enhances the function of liver, gall bladder and heart while removes waste in the body so that the patients have strength and better endure the stress. He only uses fresh natural medicinal herbs for the liver to function without a burden even if the patients take the medicine for a long time. Ahn says "My medicine is really safe as my family also takes it. It is my philosophy that patients are my family and I know well about their pain as I suffered from tic disorder myself when I was a child." For his contribution to the field, Ahn was chosen as an excellent Korean medicine doctor by The Joongang Ilbo and received 'Respected Person of the Year Awards from Sisa Today and 'Korea's Innovative Leader Awards' from NewsMaker in 2013 and 2015. Ahn established Suinjae Brain Science in 2013 in order to expand the public interest in brain science and related R&D. Korea's top brain scientists are currently developing effective brain training programmes at Suinjae Brain Science under its motto 'Putting science into brain'. Suinjae Brain Science also runs Brain Training Center in Gangnam, Bundang, Pyeongchon and Chicago in the US. The training programmes of the center include cognitive training, sensory integration training, visual perception training, biofeedback and neuro-feedback. Ahn says "We want to provide more effect treatment methods to the patients through continuous R&D and clinical test. We also aim to grow to be a total treatment center which will suggest various solutions to brain diseases through our combined treatment of oriental medicine, psychology and brain science."
