대부분의 종합병원은 주로 약물을 사용해 환자를 치료하는 내과와 수술을 진행하는 외과를 동시에 보유하고 있다. 이러한 이유 때문에 종합병원 응급실에는 급한 치료를 필요로 하는 여러 환자들이 연일 북새통을 이룬다. 특히 탈장은 환자 본인에게는 큰 고통이 따르는 질환이지만 절차상 응급 상황으로 분류되기 어려워 병원을 찾는 이들에게도 어려움이 따른다. 게다가 의사소통이 원활하지 않은 소아탈장 환자와 부모들에게는 그 고통이 더하다. 외과수술전문 병원으로 그 이름을 알리고 있는 담소유병원은 외과수술 전문병원의 리더로 거듭나기 위해 꾸준한 연구와 진료에 앞장서고 있다.

이 원장은 “담소유병원은 수술 전 환자와 보호자가 질병과 수술에 대해 충분히 이해할 수 있도록 PPT를 환자 및 보호자와 함께 보며 최소 30분 정도의 수술 전 설명 시간을 갖는다. 또한 수술 장면을 사진과 동영상으로 저장 후 수술이 끝난 뒤 반드시 환자와 보호자에게 보여주어 다시 한 번 이해를 돕고 있다. 15분 내외의 짧은 수술을 진행하며 수술 시 최소한의 절개를 통해 대부분 수술 당일 혹은 수술 다음날 퇴원할 수 있어 환자의 만족도가 높다. 수술 후에도 환자 스스로 제거할 수 있는 드레싱 재료 등을 사용하여 단순한 상처치료를 위한 병원 재방문의 번거로움을 없애 환자의 불편함을 줄였다. 이러한 노력들이 모이면 환자 치료의 질이 높을 수밖에 없다”고 말했다.

이 원장은 2012년 성인탈장 복강경수술 무인공막 탈장수술을 국내 최초로 성공시켰을 뿐 아니라 여유증수술 1,500례, 부유방수술 1,300례를 집행한 바 있다. 그는 조선일보 선정 대한민국 탈장 명의, 경향신문 선정 대한민국 탈장 명의, 중앙일보 선정 우리시대 명의로서 그 전문성을 인정받았을 뿐 아니라 대한내시경복강경외과학회, 대한임상종양학회, 아시아태평양탈장학회 등 다양한 학회에서 전문적인 연구실적을 이어갔으며, 작년 4월 이 원장은 국내 최초로 세계탈장학회 발표자로 선정된 바 있다.

Director Lee of Damsoyu Hospital obtained a patent for Magic Polymastia Surgery in December 2014. This was a result of the hospital's knowhow and experience accumulated by overwhelming numbers in pediatric laparoscopy surgery. Unlike other hospitals in the field, Damsoyu runs a special pediatrics ward provided with thorough patient care services. Lee says "We explain to the parents of each child patient the operational procedure in easy terms with PPT for about 30 minutes. We then provide an additional explanation on the result with the photos and video images taken during the operation so that they can have a comprehensive understanding about the whole procedure. The operation usually takes about 10 minutes with minimum incisions and the patient can leave the hospital on the day or next. Also, the bandage covering the part is made of easily removed materials so that the patient does not need to pay a visit to the hospital again in order only to take it off." The number of surgery Lee has done is quite remarkable; 1,500 times for eynecomastia and 1,300 times for polymastia. He also succeeded in non-artificial membrane hernia surgery for the first time Korea in 2012. Director Lee says "There are doctors because there are patients. And it is their role to provide their very best medical knowledge and practice to cure the patient. Doing one's best for me involves a continuous R&D in search of finding better surgery skills and knowledge. In this respect, we, Damsoyu Hospital, study and analyse more than 3 medical journals and hold 2 meetings every month in order to learn and share new information. On top of this, we are actively presenting papers at various conferences." Lee added that he felt worth whenever he saw his baby patients growing well and happy.
