최고 수준의 연구경쟁력 바탕으로 강북 거점 신약개발센터로 도약할 것

지난 5월, 덕성여대 약학대학 교수진으로 구성된 덕성혁신신약센터가 교육부와 한국연구재단이 주관하는 ‘2016 대학중점연구소 지원사업’에 선정됐다. 이번 사업 선정을 통해 덕성혁신신약센터는 9년간 연간 5억 원의 연구비를 지원받게 되며, ‘혈관신생과 면역조절 통합연구를 활용한 암전이 바이오마커 발굴 및 제어 전략 개발’에 관한 연구를 추진하게 된다.

각 분야 최고의 전문가 모여… 우수한 성과 창출 기대
근대 민족교육운동의 선구자인 차미리사 선생에 의해 1920년 창립된 덕성여자대학교는 지난 94년간 우리나라를 대표하는 명문사학 중 하나로 성장해왔다. 특히 약학대학은 1954년 설립된 이래 덕성여대의 우수한 교육 및 연구역량을 대표하는 글로벌 여성 리더의 산실로 자리매김해왔다. 이번 중점연구소 사업 선정은 그간 덕성여대 약학대학이 쌓아온 연구업적과 역량, 노하우가 결집된 결과라 볼 수 있다. 덕성혁신신약센터를 이끌고 있는 문애리 교수는 “저희 센터는 약학대학 교수진을 주축으로 암전이 타겟 발굴기술, 혈관신생 조절인자 탐색연구, 면역 조절인자 연구, 신약 타겟 발굴기술 등 각 분야 최고의 전문성을 갖춘 총 35명의 전문 연구인력으로 구성되어 있습니다. 이번 사업 선정을 계기로 집단 협력연구를 통한 연구소 발전을 도모하는 것은 물론, 국가 전략사업인 바이오의약 분야의 발전에 크게 이바지할 것으로 기대하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 이번 사업은 기반연구, 심화연구 및 산업화 연구를 통한 3단계 총 9년간의 장기과제로 수행된다. 센터는 기반연구에서 다양한 분자 타겟을 발굴하고, 심화연구를 통해 암전이 억제에 효과적인 후보물질을 도출하며, 암전이 제어의 통합적인 지식과 다양한 기술력 확보를 통하여 산업화로 이어지는 연구목표를 수행할 예정이다. 문 교수는 “암으로 인한 사망 가운데 90%는 전이에 의한 것으로서, 항암 치료에서 암전이를 억제하는 치료를 병용하는 것은 암 치료의 중요한 전략으로 대두되고 있습니다. 이에 저희 센터에서는 암 세포의 특성만을 연구하는 것에서 나아가 암세포를 둘러싼 혈관세포 및 면역세포 등 주변세포들과의 상호작용에 대한 연구를 통해 암세포의 정확한 전이 기작을 이해하고자 합니다”라고 설명했다.

유기적인 협력 네트워크로 연구역량 집중
조효선 교수는 “연구비를 기반으로 진행되는 연구과제의 특성상 공동연구나 연구협력은 무척이나 어려운 일입니다. 하지만 저희 약학대학 교수진들은 이전부터 하나의 구성원처럼 서로 협력하고 지원하는 연구를 지속적으로 수행해왔습니다”라고 전했다. 실제로 이번 사업선정에 있어서 덕성혁신신약센터의 가장 돋보였던 강점은 참여교수들 간에 유기적인 협력관계가 구축되어 있다는 점과 연구 목적을 달성하기 위한 최고의 전문가들로 구성되어 있다는 점을 꼽을 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 도봉구에 위치한 유일한 4년제 대학으로서 지역 인근의 병원, 연구소, 제약회사와의 네트워크 형성을 통해 역량을 집중시킬 수 있다는 것도 센터의 강점이다. 

강규태 교수는 “저희 대학은 그동안 우수한 교수진과 연구 성과에도 불구하고, 지리적 여건이나 규모 문제에서 한계에 부딪히곤 했습니다. 이번 사업 선정을 통해 재정적인 문제를 해결함은 물론이고, 우수한 대학원생의 발굴과 연구자를 꿈꾸는 재원들을 끌어 모을 수 있는 좋은 계기가 되리라 생각합니다”라고 말했다. 덕성여대는 그동안 여성과학자를 꿈꾸는 지역학생들을 대상으로 실험실 체험활동을 펼쳐왔으며, 지역 유관기관 및 지자체와의 연계 프로그램을 진행해왔다. 이번 사업을 통해 센터를 주축으로 한 협력 네트워크가 더욱 강화될 전망이며, 대학원의 경우 남녀 구분 없이 공학제로 운영되고 있어, 인재확보의 폭이 더욱 넓어질 것으로 보인다. 정주희 교수는 “각 대학의 특성화, 전문화를 유도함으로써 연구역량을 강화하고, 우수한 연구소를 육성하는 데에 목적을 가진 이번 사업을 통해 저희 센터가 가진 잠재력과 연구기반을 더욱 끌어올릴 수 있으리라 기대하고 있습니다. 또한 앞으로 강북 지역의 거점 연구소이자, 인류의 건강과 행복에 기여할 수 있는 최고의 신약개발센터가 될 수 있도록 최선의 노력을 다하겠습니다”라고 밝혔다. 미래 바이오산업을 이끌어 갈 핵심기술 연구에 매진하고 있는 이들의 노력이 앞으로 어떤 놀라운 결과를 창출해낼 수 있을지 사뭇 그 행보가 기대된다.

Founded by Cha Mirisa (Melissa), a pioneer of modern education in Korea, in 1920, Duksung Women’s University has played its role as one of the representative universities in Korea for the last 94 years. College of Pharmacy, opened in 1954, especially has been the cradle of global female leaders with excellent research capabilities. To prove it, the college boasts numerous outstanding research results which make it being appointed for Specialized Research Project of the government. Director Moon of the center says “Our 35 researchers of the center are actively carrying out researches on metastasis of cancer-targeted technology, angiogenesis controlling elements, immunity controlling elements and new medicine-targeted technology. Being appointed for Specialized Research Project will encourage us to actively engage in cooperation in joint research and to contribute to development of biomedical technology which is one of the national strategic projects.” The project is to be carried out for 9 years in 3 phases based on foundational, in-depth and industrial researches with the goal to find ‘various particle targets’, ‘potential elements’ which are effective for stopping the spreading of cancer cell, and ‘cancer control methods’. Moon explains “90% of people with cancer die by the spreading the cell. For this reason, technologies that can put a stop to spreading the cell are the vital element for treatment. So we are studying on interaction between blood cells and immune cells which are surrounding the cancer cells as a way to find solutions.”

Building organic cooperative network
Prof. Jo says “Actually, joint research and cooperation were very difficult to be carried out considering the limited budget. Nevertheless, our continuous effort in working together made it possible.” In fact, the reason, the center being appointed for the project is at the researchers’ organic cooperative relationship and expertise in the field in addition to its close network with the nearby hospitals, research centers and pharmaceutical firms. Prof. Gang Gyu-tae says “Despite our excellent researchers and results, the center had to face a certain limitation due to its disadvantageous location. But thanks to being appointed for the project, we are now able to foster more talented students.” Doksung University has done numerous lab experience programs for students who want to be a scientist in the future in cooperation with local governments and organizations and the project is expected to strengthen the cooperative network. It is also an advantage that the graduate school of the univsersity is run for both women and men. Prof. Jeong –Ju-hee says “We are expecting to demonstrate our research capabilities and potential to grow through the project.
