Artist Lee Sang-bok Surprises The World
"I Wish My Works Could Deliver My Message Of Peace To The World"
Artist Lee Sang-bok

If the Renaissance turned the main theme of art to man from god, artists today tend to turn their eye to oriental philosophy that values balance between man and nature. Asian artists in this respect are more advantageous than their western counterparts in terms of depth and style. <Power Korea> met artist Lee Sang-bok whom Kazakhstan, the national broadcast of Kazakhstan, highly praises.

Heaven, The Circle, Is The Space Where Inner-Self Meets The World
Talking about artist Lee Sang-bok, we need mention first that her works were highly praised at an exhibition held in Washington DC. Lee also participated in Grand Paris France and Grand Art Exhibition of Korea with her mixed media abstracts. She also received The Korea-China Cultural Exchange Awards and the president's prize of The Korean Fine Arts Association. Lee's interest in art started to bud in her elementary school years when she saw by chance Jean-François Millet's The Angelus after which she decided to be an artist. The heaven, the earth and man in the painting became the source of Lee's unique art world that studies relations between man and the universe. She built her fame in Virginia, U.S. which soon spread to Europe and recently has been called as a leading Korean artist by the national broadcast of Kazakhstan in its program 'International City Astana'. She delivered the common ground between her and the Kazak president in denuclearization and world peace as well as her own religious and oriental philosophical approaching methods to her works. She surprised westerners with universal order and ultimate invisible scenes present in her works. Lee uses Korean paper and mixed materials to create life-friendly abstracts within the boundary of philosophical and religious art based on her spiritual contemplation. The circle for Lee means heaven where inner-self meets the world. The circle is our desire toward the invisible world and the space where we shape our inner-self. A cluster of stars represents the mystery of the universe that contains inner-self, and the big bang, as well as the rise and fall of the universe, represent emptiness and nothingness in her works. The Korean papers used in her works also are tools to express the white lights which is impossible for white pigment to achieve.

The Line, The Horizon Where Virtuous Creation Makes Peace For Man
Lee has become a globally recognized artist through her 3 years of stay in the U.S. and her works have been sold like hot pies. She love Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan where western and oriental cultures are mingled in harmony. Having a look at 'Astana Vision', a declaration of leaders of nations on earth, one might agree with Lee's belief that the earth connects the heaven and man and it is the space that makes man one with nature and the universe. The space is meaningless if 'I' does not exist between the earth and the heaven, Lee says. Lee expressed vitality of shiny living things by attaching Korean paper to the planet earth in her work <We Are Connected With Lifeline>. Lee painted 'Heaven And Earth' for Beijing Art Fair and successfully combined western and oriental religious views in the <The Creation> series. God's tears are dropped to make man and the man's thoughts and will become the same as the heaven's, Lee explains. She also uses mud instead of paints to express the brown soil as an effort in finding new materials.
The Three Triangles, The Relationship That Divides And Combines The Other Two
The Heaven-Earth-Man Ideology is the criterion of Inyang Ideology that divides the world into two like Yin and Yang. Lee expressed this with Korean consonant and vowel ‘À¸’, meaning a peaceful world made by man. The circle and the line is like the relationship between microcosm and macrocosm. She also expressed this by using a Chinese word 'ìÑ' (man), the figure that the straight line (earth) rises to become a man. Lee's other work 'Birth', which expresses the process of birth of planet-like existences, tells about oneness. When a comparative religion scholar interpreted Lee's work by saying "God rules the world", she was really happy that her spirit in the work was recognized by an appreciator. Lee's passion in creating art works has never outgrown. She has carried out her biannual solo exhibition for 16 times despite her lengthy battle with cancer. She says that artists are the existence who devote themselves to finding truth. Lee also had to drift for nearly 50 years to finally find her true self and color for her work. Often referred to as a philosopher painter, Lee in 2015 received The Korea-China Cultural Exchange Awards and in 2016 The Korea Peace Contributors Awards. Lee currently is scheduled to hold a solo exhibition at EXPO-2017 ASTANA.
