Korean rice cakes are beautiful in color and shape and their taste and nutritional value are no need to mention here. Sadly, the market seem to have been dominated by the western cakes backed up by trendy coffee and other fancy juices. Finding the weak point in its commercial part, CEO Jeong Min-su of Sparrow Mill challenged the trend by using local specialties like apple, grape, mulberry and strawberry. Jeong used to work as a TV cooking show producer and had a great interest in healthy food. He spent a 3 year preparation period and started to sell rice cakes online. Putting the business well on track with increasing number of orders, Jeong was encouraged to expand the business to a cooking school with the added product line: fusion rice cake. Jeong introduced the globally renowned system of Wilton School to the fusion rice cake curriculum to maximize both nutritional and artistic values of the fusion rice cakes. Opening the recipe to the public also has played a great part in spreading the fame of Sparrow Mill. Those who passed the 1 year course at Sparrow Mill are working for the cultural centers at 216 department stores nationwide at the moment. Jeong has fostered more than 150 fusion rice cake specialists and some of them also are working for the Vocational Training Center for Women Busan and 60 of agricultural training centers nationwide. Jeong and the specialists have developed approximately 2,500 fusion rice cake recipes for the last 10 years and they are confident with its global competitiveness. The SNS marketing of Sparrow Mill also has played a role in spreading its nutritional taste and beautiful colors to younger generations.
