한글의 자음과 모음을 해체하고 조립하면서 회화의 평면과 입체 그리고 조형과 건축까지 활동의 폭을 확장하는 금보성 작가를 ‘한글회화의 거장, 미술계 프로듀서, 문화 대통령’이라 불리는 그의 작품세계와  금보성아트센터의 근황을 정리해 본다.

표음문자 한글은 영어, 한자와 달리 자음과 모음의 조합으로 의미가 생긴다. 이러한 한글을 조각으로 해체해 재구성하면 독창적인 모티브가 될 것이라는 발상을 33년 전 떠올려, 현재는 독자적인 영역으로까지 상승시킨 선구자가 금보성 작가다. 여수 출신으로 그로리치 화랑의 3대 관장, 이후 갤러리 평창동과 김흥수 미술관을 인수해 현재의 금보성아트센터로 거듭나게 한 금 작가는 미술계에 주목받지 못한 무명 작가였지만, 미술계가 아닌 일반인들에게는 그의 작품은 고가로 거래되는 작가이다. 금작가의 작품은 현재 정계 재계 인사들이 두루 소장할 만큼 특별하다. 금 작가의 ‘한글회화’는 한 마디로 요약해 ‘소리에 색을 입히다’로 표현된다. 금작가의 작품은 전시보다는 주문에 의해 만들어 지기에 개인들이 소장하려고 긴 시간을 기다려야 한다. 인간 개개인이 지닌 상생과 상극의 기운을 조합해 균형과 조화를 이루어 작업한다. 한글이라는 언어는 발성구조와 사물을 축약한 글자이자 자연과 인간의 이치를 담고 있기에, 금 작가는 그림을 통해 인간의 기운을 자극해 건강한 삶을 살길 바라는 마음으로 작품에 임하기에 성공한 CEO들에게 행운의 상징으로 높은 인기를 누리며 소장가치를 인정받고 있다. 자유로운 소재를 선택하고 회화, 입체, 설치미술, 조형, 패션 등 작업이 산업으로 발전되어지길 도전하고 실험하고 있다. 
아트센터 운영하면서 틈틈이 작품을 구상하는 금 작가는 미술계 현황에 대해, 작가로서 작업에 성실하게 임하는 것이 본분이라고 말한다. 한글의 사용이 다양해지길 바라면서 재료에 있어 금속, 돌, 종이는 물론, 플라스틱, 풍선과 같은 일상적인 소재도 사용하였다. 대형 풍선 조형물인 방파제<테트라포드>시리즈는 선명한 색감과 방파제의 상징성, 단순하고 아름다운 형태로 현대미술이 어렵다는 편견을 쉽게 깨뜨린 작품으로 기억된다. 이렇게 새로운 한글회화 부문에서 최초이자 최고의 영역에 오르기까지 금 작가는 물감을 넘어 새로운 소재, 재료탐구로 입체그림, 조각그림이라는 생소한 분야에서도 작가적 경계에 갇히지 않고 영역을 확장하고 있다. 몇 년 전부터 미술학원이나 미대 졸업생 사이에 말은 제주도로 보내고 화가로 성공하려면 금보성아트센터로 가야 한다고 할 정도로 금보성아트센터의 보이지 않은 힘이 궁금하다.

유명 드라마 <캐리어를 끄는 여자>, <백야>, <불야성> 등 다수 작품과 CF에 종종 등장해 화제를 모았던 금보성아트센터다. 최근 아리랑TV의 외신기자들의 시사토론 녹화하는 장소로도 쓰인다. ‘창작의 수고로운 짐을 진 자유로운 영혼의 쉼 터’로서 소통과 나눔의 정신을 가지고 운영하는 아트센터는 작가들을 성장하게 하는 인큐베이팅 같은 곳이라기보다 [허브]라고 한다. 굵직굵직한 해외작가 초청 전시와 초청강연회. 패션쇼 등 많은 일들을 해내고 있다. 지방 작가들을 배려한 전시 중에도 금보성아트센터의 미술계 획기적인 일은 60세 이상 작가들을 위한 상금1억원 한국작가상과 청년작가 지원은 아무나 쉽게 할 수 없는 미술계 전환점이 되었다. 

한글회화 북한에서 전시하는 꿈을 꾸다
세종대왕은 한글을 창시하였으며 금보성 작가는 한글을 현대회화로 발전시켜 한글회화의 창시자라고 한다. 금 작가가 관장으로서 존경할 인물은 간송 전형필 선생님이셨다. 금 관장은 작가도 국가가 될 수 있다고 한다. 우리가 알고 있는 스페인의 피카소. 달리. 미로. 가우디가 작가로 알려 졌지만 금 작가는 로마 안에 바티칸처럼 스페인의 화가로 받아들이기보다 스페인의 소국가로 인정해야 한다고 역설한다. 그래서 작가도 국가가 될 수 있으며, 지금 금보성에서 전시하는 작가는 언젠가 대한민국의 국가로 성장할 것을 믿고 있다. 마지막으로 하고 싶은 것이나 바라는 것을 부탁하였다.
‘한글은 대한민국 문화 산업의 성장 동력입니다. 한글을 사용하는 국가는 한국과 북한입니다. 제가 작업한 한글회화를 북한에서 전시하고 싶은데 어려움이 많습니다. 정치 경제적으로 냉전이지만 문화는 불쏘시게 처럼 작은 역할을 하리라 봅니다. 이번 정부의 문화 코드로 한글이 그 역할을 할 수 있도록 기대하고 싶습니다.’

Kim pours the logic of yin and yang into Korean alphabet painting
Korean alphabets are phonetic symbols. They create a meaning by combination of consonants and vowels. At the end of the day, however, they are categorized as a language. In this respect, it is interesting to learn about the Korean alphabet painting artist Kim Bo-sung. He brought up the idea of deconstruction and reconstruction of the Korean alphabet 33 years ago in order to create something unique figures. Yeosu born and fed, Kim served as the third director of the Grorich Gallery and took over the Gallery Pyeongchangdong and the Kim Heung Su Gallery to make it into the current Kim Bo Sung Art Center. Kim did not make much of his presence in the artistic circle but his works have been purchased at quite a lump sum by some of renowned political and economic figures. Often cited as the artist who 'paints the sound', one must wait for a certain amount of time to obtain a work of his as he mainly launches a work by order. Kim pours the logic of yin and yang as well as balance and harmony into his works. He thinks that Korean alphabets contain the order of nature and man and for this reason delivers his wish of people's wellbeing to each work which is the point of attracting successful entrepreneurs to possess one. Kim uses various materials such as metal, stone, paper, plastic and balloon. The large balloon breakwater installment 'Tetrapod', for example, is praised for its vivid color, symbolic elements and simple yet beautiful shape. Genre-wise, Kim's works are unique and he himself is the best in the field. Some say that one must send her child to Kim Bo Sung Art Center if the child is to be a great artist in the future.

Kim Bo Sung Art Center appeared in a number of TV series: Woman with a Suitcase, Midnight Sun and Night Light; and some commercials. It recently has been used as a set of the Arirang TV for a debate of foreign reporters. Under its slogan 'haven for those with free souls who carry a burden of creation', the center functions as a gathering hub of many artists. The center invites globally renowned artists and holds lectures and even fashion shows while runs a competition for artists aged over 60 to win the 100 million won ($88,873) prize money. 

Kim wishes to hold an exhibition in North Korea
Kim is known as the initiator of the Korean alphabet painting. He has a great respect to his teacher Gansong Jeon Hyeong-pil. Kim says that an artist can be a nation; Picasso and Dali, for example, are Spanish artists but they must be recognized as a nation itself, according to Kim; likewise, he believes, the artists who have had exhibitions at Kim Bo Sung Art Center can also be nations. When asked about his wishes, Kim said "I wish to hold an exhibition in North Korea one day. Though separated, we all are Koreans and use Korean alphabet. I think culture can play a role to bridge the politically frozen relations even if it is a small effort." <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
