경력 11년의 방송국 PD출신이자 MBN토크쇼 진행자, 브랜드마케팅 프로모션전문가로 광고와 엔터테인먼트에 영향력을 발휘하며 8년 전 드림공화국을 만든 손진기 대표는 ‘토크 콘서트 선구자’라는 별명으로도 유명하다. 다큐제작 비하인드 에피소드의 높은 인기가 <남극의 눈물>등 전설적인 다큐시리즈의 성공에 공헌한 점을 생각하면, 훨씬 전인 1997년 국내 최초로 다큐토크 포맷을 착안했으며, 토크콘서트를 개발하고 대중화시킨 손 대표의 발상이 얼마나 혁신적인지를 알 수 있다. 드림공화국은 고인이 된 사회지도층의 이야기이자 제 3의 인물에 의해 각색된 위인전이 아니라, 살아 있는 콘텐츠를 개발한다. 섭외전문가 손 대표는 조부모들에게 생활의 지혜를 직접 배운 자신의 경험을 살려, 핵가족 체계에서 자란 현대인들을 위한 아이디어를 냈다. 그래서 왕성하게 활동 중인 사회 지도층을 직접 토크콘서트에 초대해 관객과 소통하고, 음악 공연을 끼워 생생한 지식을 전달한다. 2010년부터 82차례나 진행되었으며 ‘살아있는 위인전’인 토크콘서트 <꿈을 만드는 토크쇼>는 정치·경제·사회·문화 부문의 유명인들, 6번이나 방문하여 섭외한 ‘방랑식객’ 산단 임지호 선생을 비롯해 “빨래 끝!”의 히트 카피라이터 최병광(최카피)처럼 현업으로 유명한 인사들을 초청해 차별화 된 정보와 지식을 전하고 있다. 또 손 대표는 독보적인 지식예술을 부담 없이 전할 수 있도록 전달방식의 군살을 뺐다. 유명 오케스트라에 소속된 아티스트들을 개인 연주, 4인 앙상블로 조합해 초청함으로써 미국 하버드대, 영국 킹스컬리지 아카펠라 팀과 러시안 챔버앙상블, 아쉬케나지 피아니스트의 유려한 사운드를 소개할 수 있었고, 연주 전 곡설명과 끝난 후 관객과의 만남을 주선해 많은 고정 팬들을 만든 것이다. 그리고 실력파일지라도 수천 만 원에 달하는 대관료가 부담스러워, 연주 실력을 보이기 힘든 클래식 아티스트들을 위해 개런티 대신 수익의 절반을 나누는 조건으로 국립극장에서 33회 째 진행하고 있는 <음악토크쇼>도 있다. 

아울러 <미술토크전람회>에 참가한 미술가는 작품해설과 내포된 메시지 등을 관객들에게 설명하고 작품판매로 연결할 수 있다. 매달 첫째 수요일에 개최하는 <정오음악회>는 중복출연 없이도 388회나 개최되었고, 협찬으로 무료 식사를 제공해 직장인들에게 인기를 끌고 있다. 또 15명 정원의 <명사의 만찬>은 사회저명인사와 1만원 내외의 식사비만으로 직접 대면하며 식사, 담소할 수 있는 프로그램으로 유명하다. 이런 꾸준한 진행 덕분에 장소 섭외와 제작을 하는 PD와 스탭들의 역량이 날로 늘어가, 손 대표는 이제 인물 섭외, MC에 주로 전념하고 있지만, 해당 인물에 대한 연구와 콘텐츠 제작을 위해 대본만큼은 직접 쓴다고 한다. 명사에게 무엇을 질문한다는 것은 곧 관객들에게 전달할 내용을 결정하는 것이기 때문이다. 손 대표는 회비제로 착한 사람들이 세상에 영향력을 발휘하는 이 문화 사업도 우리 사회에 반드시 자리 잡아 꾸준한 수익을 낼 수 있을 것이라고 단언한다. 월 1만 원이면 토크콘서트는 물론 드림공화국의 풍부한 문화 콘텐츠를 무료, 혹은 할인가로 누릴 수 있기 때문에 점점 회원이 늘어, 4년 전 4명으로 시작된 정회원은 이제 정운찬 전 국무총리, 탤런트 이순재, 용혜원 시인 등을 포함해 1,700여 명으로 늘었다. 이렇듯 손 대표는 드림공화국으로 강의와 공연문화를 연결하고, 회원들 간의 인맥과 비즈니스를 활용해 집단지식을 형성하는 사업을 키워 가고 있다. 지난 8년간 사비를 들여 손 대표는 수많은 이들에게 세상은 돈이 전부가 아니라는 철학을 알려 왔다. 3시간 30분 동안 모두가 자리를 지켰다는 엄홍길 대장의 토크쇼 중 “빙벽에서 17시간 동료를 달고 사투한 경험이 있다. 당신은 목숨 걸고 일해본 적이 있는가”라는 명언처럼 사람들에게 희망과 긍정으로 삶의 동기를 부여하는 일은 중요하기 때문이다. 그래서 손 대표는 이에 동참하는 회원들을 위해 연말에 시상식을 열어 연 67회 중 65회나 참가한 회원에게 최다참가상을 수여했으며, 함께 토크콘서트를 찾은 딸의 긍정적인 변화를 만들어 낸 어머니에게 가족상으로 축하했다고 한다. 
한편, 손 대표는 최카피의 신간을 위한 북토크콘서트를 비롯한 새로운 콘텐츠를 준비 중이다. 올바른 나라, 순수한 철학과 가치관의 시민들이 더 잘 사는 나라를 만들기 위해 문화부장관이 되는 포부를 가졌다는 손 대표의 아이디어에 함께 기대를 걸어 본다.

 CEO Sohn Jin-ki of Dream City worked as a PD of a broadcasting company for 11 years and went through a number of career paths including a MBN talk show host and a brand marketing promotion specialist. Launching his own company Dream City 8 years ago, he gained his nickname as ‘the pioneer of talk concert’. 

His idea of behind episode of documentary production contributed to the success of <Tears of the Antarctic> and his innovation is well received as the one who pioneered the talk concert and its commercialization. Sohn focuses on biography of great people living today over the clichéd dramatized stories of great people deceased and invites the living legends to talk shows to deliver their stories and ideas alongside music concert in the middle to liven up the mood. 

He has organized 82 talk shows since 2010 and <Dream Making Talk Show> in particular is famous for inviting the chef Im Ji-ho of ‘Bludger’ and the copywriter Choi Byeong-gwang of ‘Laundry Finished!’ 

Sohn also organized famous classical musicians of Harvard University (US), King’s College A Cappella (UK), a Russian chamber ensemble and Ashkenazy pianist into single and a quartet to deliver beautiful sound to Korean audience. He also organized a meeting with audience after the concerts which contributed to turning the audience to fans.  

For those professional classical musicians who could not afford expensive hiring fee of concert halls, Sohn brought up <Music Talk Show> that divided the profit half and half instead of the hiring fee and it has been running for 33 times. 

Sohn’s idea did not stop here: <Art Talk Exhibition> delivers explanation and messages of the works to visitors that can lead them to buying works while <Noon Music Concert> has been held 388 times with free meals. <Feat of Personage>, on the other hand, offered an opportunity to people to have a meal with the personage at a cost of 10,000 won ($8.90). It is notable that Sohn writes scripts by himself as the questions of audience decide the answers delivered to them. 

If you pay 10,000 won a month, you can enjoy rich cultural contents of Dream City at a discounted price. The number of the paid members started with 4 people 4 years ago and has grown to 1,700 today including the former Prime Minister Chung Un-chan, actor Lee Soon-jae and poet Yong Hae-won. 

Many of the talk show heroes delivered their messages of ‘money is not everything’. The climber Um Hong-gil, for example, said in his talk show organized by Dream City “I once fought for 17 hours hanging on the rock to save my colleague. Have you ever worked by risking your life?” The audience of the talk show kept their seat for 3 hours and a half. 

Those who participated in 65 talk shows out of 67 were awarded the most participation prize by Sohn and a mother who gave a testimony that her daughter changed to be positive after talk concerts was given the family prize.

Meanwhile, Sohn is preparing a book concert for Choi Copy (Choi Byeong-gwang) who recently released a book. When asked about his future plan, Sohn said that he wished to be the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to make a nation where citizens with pure philosophy and values can live better.
