국내 수제화의 명가 성수동에서 출발해 대기업 OEM으로 검증받은 순수 국내기술 수제화의 이미지 변신이 화제를 모으고 있다. 제이오앤제이오코리아의 이종국 대표는 올해 특수공법으로 제작한 수제화 브랜드 ‘제이레아’를 런칭하며 여성화 분야에서 얻은 명성을 남성화로도 함께 이어가며, 국내 수제화의 정상급 기술로 해외진출을 준비하고 있다. 기능성 슈즈의 편안함에 독창적 디자인과 고급 소재로 이목을 집중시키는 ‘제이레아’ 슈즈의 진면목을 알아보자.

35년 슈즈 전문가 노하우의 핵심, 특허 받아 더 똑똑해진 슈즈 ‘제이레아’
기능성 수제화에 세련된 디자인, 가벼운 착화감을 더한 ‘제이레아’는 지난 1982년 슈즈업계에 뛰어들어 서울 성수동 수제화계를 이끈 이종국 대표가 2011년 중곡동에 설립한 제이오앤제이오코리아의 첫 번째 브랜드다. 그동안 자체 기술력으로 개발한 슈즈를 유명 브랜드 ‘미**’의 백화점 납품 브랜드로 OEM제작하며 매년 매출을 올리는 성과를 거둔 이 대표는 걸을 때마다 발바닥과 발목, 무릎, 허리에 가해지는 충격을 완화하는 소재로 슈즈를 제작했다고 전한다. 슈즈의 안창과 밑창은 충격흡수가 잘 되는 스포츠화전문소재인 에바(EVA)로 제작해 평발이나 외근이 잦은 직장인, 근력이 떨어진 노약자와 변형된 발 모양을 가진 고객들에게 인기가 좋다. 발바닥에 닿는 느낌과 신고 땅을 딛는 순간 편안함을 느끼는 비결은 바로 3단계로 나뉘는 에어쿠션, 걷는 피로를 줄이고 발에 착 달라붙는 아치형 디자인, 신체의 하중이 고르게 분산되며 기능성소재를 추가할 수 있는 밑창이다. 기능을 모두 갖추고도 130-170g정도의 초경량 무게이며 오래 걸어도 느낌이 거의 없어 ‘양말 같은 슈즈’로 불리기도 한다. 이 대표는 발이 닿기도 전에 쿠션이 완충작용을 하는 슈즈는 많지만 세련된 디자인도 겸비한 수제화를 원하는 요청에도 응답했다. 그래서 정장과 세미캐주얼 모두에 두루 매치할 수 있는 ‘제이레아’의 주 고객층이 40-70대 여성이며 특히 무릎연골과 허리가 좋지 않은 분들의 재구매율이 높다고 전한다. 또한 착화감을 보강하고자 중곡동 본사에서 전속 디자이너와 연구개발팀을 두고 5년 간 개발한 결과 스포츠슈즈 수준으로 기술력을 업그레이드 할 수 있었다고 한다. 

최고수준 한국 수제화 제작기술에 창의적 변화를 더해 앞서가다
‘제이레아(J-Rhea)’는 백화점과 프리미엄 아울렛에서 선보인 OEM 프로토타입의 반응을 통해, 더 큰 시장 진출이 가능하다는 확신 속에서 지난 몇 달간 철저한 준비를 거쳐 탄생했다. 또한 해외 진출을 고려하여 이 대표의 이름인 알파벳 J에 대지의 풍요로움, 신들의 어머니인 그리스 여신 레아의 이름을 땄다고 한다. 본래 여성 수제화로 높은 명성을 얻었기에 여신의 이름을 붙이기도 했지만, 레아라는 단어에는 슈즈의 4가지 장점인 편안한(R:relaxed), 고기능성(H:high-functional), 쉬운(E;easy), 공기처럼 가벼운(A:airlike)이라는 의미도 있다. 이 대표는 9-10월경에는 점차 증가하는 남성 기능성 컴포트수제화의 니즈에 맞춰 100% 남녀수제화 브랜딩을 마치고 출고할 것임을 밝혔다. 보통 수제화 제작에는 7-10일 정도 걸리지만, 제이레아 슈즈는 특수제작 방법으로 약 1달가량이 걸린다. 그러다 보니 오프라인으로 판매할 때 슈즈구입처 문의가 많이 들어왔던 관계로, 올해는 백화점 OEM으로 보냈던 것과 같은 공법이되 다른 디자인으로 미리 제작해 주문 후 3-4일이면 받을 수 있도록 생산을 해 둘 예정이라고 한다. 
제이레아 슈즈는 성수동의 여러 제작공법인 시멘팅(접착제로 슈즈몸통과 창을 잇는 방식)공법이 아닌 새로운 봉합 방식으로 제작했다. 기술력이란 응용에서 끝나는 게 아니라 더 변화를 주어야 완성된다는 지론을 가진 이 대표는 “이 기술로 남녀 구두 모두 제작할 수 있다”며 “자신들의 작품이 유럽산 부드러운 가죽으로 만들어 촉감이 좋고, 무겁고 딱딱해서 길들이기 어렵다는 수제화의 관념을 깬 첫 번째 쿠셔닝 수제화일 것”이라고 밝혔다. 

‘제이레아’로 기능성 수제화의 프리미엄, 오리지널리티를 국내외로 입증할 것
이 대표는 제이레아를 출시하기 위해 기능성 컴포트 제화업계 최초로 벤처기업 인증을 받았다. 2011년 신청해 이듬해 취득한 신발 제조공법 특허 제 10-1127031호 및 수출에 필요한 ISO인증 역시 제이레아에 대한 주변의 기대치가 어느 정도인지 짐작케 한다. 이 대표는 한국 제화기술은 세계적인 수준이지만, 유럽시장에 통하는 인기 브랜드가 없는 이유에 대해 유명한 디자인이 나오면 너도나도 카피하여 오리지널리티를 갖지 못하는 점을 지적한다. 성수동 시절에도 수많은 백화점 브랜드들조차 이 악순환을 벗어나지 못했기에, 이 대표는 단 한 브랜드에만 납품하여 카피본의 난입을 줄였다고 한다. 그 뿐 아니라, 기능성 슈즈로 판로를 개척하게 되었으며 외관은 흉내 내도 내부의 기술력을 아무나 따라잡지 못할 경지에 이르렀다고 자부한다. 디자인 면에서 한국을 바짝 뒤쫓고 있는 중국 시장의 경우, 접음질, 박음질, 접착과 접합, 마감까지 각자 라인작업을 하면서 경쟁력을 얻고 있는 반면 한국은 제작의 전 과정을 수제로 해내는 전문가 타입이 많다. 그래서 한국 시장은 이런 다재다능한 제작기술을 잘 활용하여 맞춤수제화, 특수수제화에서 경쟁력을 갖춰야 한다는 의견이 있다. 이 대표는 이러한 한국 제화기술의 엑기스에 자신만의 공법을 결합시킨 제이레아이기에, 직접 제대로 신어 본 후에야 그 진가를 알게 될 것이라고 한다. 슈즈 패턴을 만들던 30여 년 전, 이 대표는 현장에서 일이 끝나고 밤 10시에 다시 패턴을 연구하고 독창적인 기술력을 갖기 위해 노력하며 새벽 2-3시 퇴근 후 정시에 출근하는 생활을 오랫동안 해 왔다고 한다. 기술을 완성하고 디자인에 집중하기 위해 독립한 지 5년, 이 대표는 기능성 수제화의 프리미엄을 입증하고 독자적 행보를 거쳐 한국과 세계 여성들에게 제이레아를 신게 하겠다는 포부를 세웠다. 앞으로 이 대표의 기술력과 강한 의지로 철저한 AS와 꾸준한 신상 개발, 신소재 결합과 유행을 선도하는 디자인으로 수출판로를 개척해 나갈 것이다. 이 대표는 오는 가을 본격적으로 홈페이지를 개편해 온라인 쇼핑몰을 운영하고, 제이레아의 전용 브랜드샵을 만들기 위해 일정에 박차를 가하고 있다. 머지않아 한국 수제화의 또 다른 가능성을 이룰 제이레아의 이름을 반드시 기억해야 할 것이다.

J-Rhea boasts the expertise of master shoe maker's 35 years of knowhow
Lee jumped into shoes industry in 1982 and has led the Seongsu-dong handmade shoes trend with functional shoes in sophisticated design and comfort. Lee established J-Rhea, the first brand of JO&JO Korea in Junggok-dong in 2011. The shoes formerly were on the market with 'Mi**' through OEM and Lee focused on easing the impact on sole, ankle, knee and waist when walking in the shoes. EVA, famous material for absorbing impact, is specially goof for flat feet, workers with constant business trip and people with weakened muscle strength and deformed foot shape. 
The shoes are ideally designed for heavy work loaded workers or people with weak muscles or abnormal foot shape. The air cushion disperses the impact in three stages, the arch-type design reduces the fatigue on walking and the sole balances the body with even weight. Despite all these functions, the shoes weigh only 130g to 170g and they often called 'shoes like socks' as you do not feel you are walking.
J-Rhea responses well to the demand for formal dress and semi-casual and women in their 40s to 70s who suffer from pain in knee cartilage and waist. They have the highest re-purchase rate according to Lee. He also launched design and R&D teams 5 years ago and has upgraded the technology to a level of trainers despite they are shoes. 

Top class Korean shoe making technique calls creative changes
J of J-Rhea comes from the initial of CEO Lee's middle name and the latter is Greek goddess known as 'the mother of gods'. Lee named Rhea to present the popularity of his shoes for women in which he poured four principles: relaxed (R), high-functional (H), easy (E) and airlike (A). Pushing forward the tradition, Lee is planning to release 100% handmade shoes for men and women around September or October this year in answer to the market demand for functional comfort shoes. 
If normal shoes take about 7 to 10 days to finish, J-Rhea takes about a month due to the special manufacturing method. But Lee is to facilitate the system to distribute the shoes to the market including department stores within 2 to 3 days. 
Unlike the traditional cementing method (sticking the body of the shoes with the soles) in Seoungsu-dong, J-Rhea uses the new stitching method. It is Lee's conviction that technique is completed through change over application and he said "This new stitching method can make shoes for both mem and women the smooth European leather we use gives soft feel of cushion that has broken the prejudice that leather shoes are hard."

Spreading originality of J-Rhea to the world
Lee's 100% Korean luxury handmade shoes obtained Korea's first shoes venture certificate and a patent for shoes manufacturing method (No.10-1127031) in 2012 alongside the ISO certificate needed for export. However, Lee points out the prolonged copy tradition of Korea as the main cause for lack of originality despite the design and technique are second to none. This is one of the reasons that Lee turned his eye to functional shoes. 

While China is catching up the shoes market with mass production process, Lee suggests to focus on made to order and handmade to secure competitiveness. In this respect, Lee is confident to say that everybody will see the excellence of J-Rhea once putting the shoes on. 
For the last 30 years, Lee finished his daily schedule at 2 to 3am but started his work on time as always for many days. And for the last 5 years since establishing J-Rhea, it has been Lee's goal to spread excellence of functional shoes to the world over Korea. For this, Lee and his team are determined to keep carrying on the R&D and development of new materials and designs. This autumn, the team will push forward online shopping mall and J-Rhea store.
