2010년 12월 한국외국인학교의 현악 사중주로 출발해 2014년 클래식 앙상블 그룹으로 성장한 12인조 고교생 그룹 블루피닉스의 7번째 여름 시즌 자선 공연 ‘세렌디피티’가 지난 8월 21일 보바스 기념공연 홀에서 성황리에 개최되었다. 기악 비전공자들이지만 음악을 사랑하고, 하나 이상의 악기를 즐겨 다루는 고교생 친구들이 우정을 다지며 실력을 발휘한 이 공연은, 뇌신경 환자들의 재활에 헌신한 영국의 보바스 부부의 큰 뜻을 기리며 설립된 장소에서 매년 개최되어 더욱 의미가 깊다. 지난 7년간 블루피닉스는 2015년 세월호 추모콘서트, 보바스병원 드림콘서트, 탈북청소년을 위한 <위아원> 공연, ‘애니아(Aenea)의 집’ 크리스마스 자선공연 등 알찬 일정을 치르며 멤버 라인업을 키워 왔다. 블루피닉스는 공연 하루 전 모여 주요 레퍼토리를 음반으로 녹음하는 바쁜 일정 속에서, 이날 파가니니, 보로딘, 쇼스타코비치 등의 클래식테마, 팝 뮤직 및 영화 OST로 구성된 3개의 프로그램을 멋지게 선보여 한여름의 ‘세렌디피티(뜻밖의 행운)’라는 즐겁고 행복한 메시지를 널리 전했다. 앞으로 9월에는 블루피닉스 기념 앨범이 출간되고 국제적 음원 유통을 통한 글로벌한 청소년 앙상블을 꿈꾼다. 

한지수(Victoria Han) - 바이올린 / Milton Academy (in Boston)
한국외국인학교에 재학하던 시절인 2010년 블루피닉스를 창단한 현악 사중주 멤버 중 한 사람이자 첫 번째 리더였으며, 퍼스트 바이올린 및 솔로 바이올린 파트를 맡고 있다. 한지수가 생각하는 바이올린의 매력은 현의 솔직함과 예민함에서 나온다고 한다. 현재 만 16세로 현재 보스톤에 있는 밀튼 아카데미를 재학 중이지만 여름, 겨울 방학 시즌에 입국하여 활동 중에 있다. 또한 보바스 병원, 애니아의 집 등에서 자선 연주를 하고 얻은 후원금과 수익금을 기부하는 블루피닉스의 활동 시스템을 친구들과 함께 만든 인물이기도 하다. 비전공자지만 어릴 때부터 악기 연주를 시작해서 연주를 좋아하는 친구들과 뜻을 모아 2010년 겨울 공연을 시작으로 점점 멤버 수를 늘려가게 되었다. 매해 겨울 중증장애아 애니아의 집 공연 연주를 하면서 휠체어에 앉은 환자들이 음악을 듣고 환호를 지르면 즐거워 할때 연주 준비로 피로한 마음이 보람으로 바뀐다고 한다. 보바스 기념공연 홀에서 4년 째 진행하는 자선공연을 통해, 환자와 가족들 가까이에서 음악으로 기쁨을 전할 수 있는 경험을 소중히 생각하며 블루피닉스가 앞으로도 꾸준히 음악으로 봉사할 수 있는 단체로 성장하기를 바란다. 또한 블루피닉스는 10년 가까이 봉사 연주로 쌓인 경험으로 현재 비영리단체 설립에 임박해 있으며, 재단 설립은 블루 피닉스가 우리나라뿐만 아니라 나아가서 전 세계의 중증 장애아와 노인 환자들을 위한 기관에 기부하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 앞으로도 친구들이 대학 진학 및 사회생활을 시작한 후에도 자선 공연을 이어갈 수 있기를 바란다고 밝혔다. 

윤채은(Sarah Yoon) - 바이올린 / St. Paul's School
블루피닉스 창단 멤버로, 음악을 좋아하는 친구들이 모인 현악 콰르텟을 10년간 경험하여, 오케스트라는 물론 여러 형태의 앙상블에 매력을 느낀다고 한다. 친구들과의 연주를 대중들 앞에서의 자선 공연으로 추진한 멤버이기도 하며 초등학교 6학년때 대관과 티켓팅으로 이뤄진 작지만 알찬 단독공연은 잊지못할 도전이었다. 블루피닉스 활동은 미국 보스턴의 Fay School, 뉴햄프셔 주내 St. Paul’s로 유학가면서 방학때만 가능하여 아쉬우나 Fay School 에서는 오케스트라 악장도 맡아 앙상블을 통해 체득한 팀 정신을 새길 수 있었다고 한다. 바이올린은 하루만 놓아도 음색이 미묘하게 변하는 악기로서 치열한 경쟁과 긴장을 유발하지만. 연습을 할수록 느껴지는 성취감과 정직함에 매료되어 꾸준히 연주하게 되었다고 한다. 탐내 창단 멤버들과 곡 선정, 디렉션을 의논하는 열정적인 멤버로 특히 아트에 흥미가 많아 이번 녹음시 이선우, 양한나와 함께 앨범 CD디자인을 작업하였다. 같은 학교 유학중인 이상윤과 이번 앨범 판매 및 음원수입을 미국 뉴햄셔 주의 지역내 중증장애인단체에 기부를 하는 계획도 세우고 있다. 윤채은은 힘든 상황에서도 서로 배려하는 친구들에게 감사를 전하며, 봉사와 함께 우정을 다지는 소중한 시간을 훗날 홍대 등 연주 전문 공간에서도 이어가길 바란다고 전했다. 더불어 지속적인 작은 봉사가 한국 및 미국 등 지역사회에 감동이 되기를 바란다고 한다. 

이선우(Felicia Lee) - 바이올린 / Korea International School
고등부로 올라오면서 블루 피닉스 활동을 권유 받고, 단순한 연주가 아닌 봉사가 연계된 활동이기에 기쁜 마음으로 참여하게 되었다. 그 이전까진 솔로나 학교 오케스트라 일원으로 활동했지만, 서로 바라보며 호흡과 음악을 맞추는 콰르텟은 서로를 배려하고 신뢰하는 연주임을 배울수 있었다. 블루피닉스 연습과 활동은 많은 시간과 에너지가 필요했지만, 그만큼 수많은 학교 행사에 참여함으로써 생각지도 못했던 경험들을 할 수 있었다. 기억에 남는 행사는 리퍼트 대사 방문시 전교생이 들어선 강당에서의 연주와, 콰이어팀과의 협연이다. 또한 정기적으로 방문하는 보바스 병원 연주에서 뇌질환 환자분들도 자신이 익숙한 곡에 보여주시는 호응과 즐기시는 모습에 감동을 받았고, 음악적 언어로 서로 다른 사람들과 소통하는데 의미가 있다고 공연을 통해 느끼게 되었다. 이런 느낌은 활동을 계속하는 이유가 되어갔고, 박별오름, 양한나와 교내 클럽을 만들어 더 많은 친구들과 같은 뜻과 의미를 이어나가고 있다. 바이올린은 섬세하면서도 멜로디를 리드해 나가는 매력적인 악기이며. 방학마다 만날 수 있는 유학 간 친구들과의 공연은 더욱 다양한 악기와 함께 풍성한 소리를 낼 수 있어 즐겁다. 이 모든 친구들과의 애니아의 집 공연은 기부를 이끌어 내어 우리가 실질적으로 도움이 될 수도 있다는  경험을 주게 되었고, 그래서 이번 블루피닉스 비영리단체의 설립이 우리의 뜻을 더 크고 단단하게 다져주는 밑바탕이 된 것 같다. 녹음 과정 중 앨범 디자인과 편집을 맡아 양한나, 윤채은과 이미지를 만들고 편집하며, 앨범을 만드는 과정을 더한 것도 우리가 만든 앨범이라는 잊지 못할 해 추억이다. 이번 친구들과 녹음, 촬영은 또 다른 새로운 경험이었고, 다들 바쁜 시간을 맞춰가며 공연까지 스케줄을 치르는 과정을 통해 더욱 돈독해졌고, 졸업 후에도 시간이 날 때마다 우리의 연주와 공연이 계속 되길 바란다.

양한나 (Hannah Yang)- 비올라 / Korea International School
5년 전 친한 친구들의 블루피닉스 활동과 교류에 흥미를 느끼고 당시 팀에 부재중이던 비올라파트를 제안 받아 블루피닉스 앙상블에 입단했다. 입단 3개월 만에 서게 된 첫 무대를 시작으로 1년간 맹훈련 끝에 다음해에는 블루피닉스 정식 콰르텟 멤버로 들어가 박별오름, 이선우와 함께 학교 내 교내동아리도 창단했다. 수많은 학교 행사 뿐 아니라 리퍼트 주한미대사 방문 시 전교생과 외부인사들 앞에서 떨리는 공연도하고 학교 콰이어 팀의 제안으로 함께 공연을 다니는 등 바쁜 활동을 이어나갔다. 또한 해외에서 공부하는 친구들이 들어오는 여름 겨울에는 봉사 공연을 함께 준비하며 학업과의 병행이 힘들기도 했지만 친구들과 정기적으로 만날 수 있는 기회가 되어 즐거운 추억으로 남았다고 한다. 블루피닉스는 음악활동이지만, 이 공연들을 준비하는데 필요한 팜플렛을 해마다 몇 번씩 디자인 하는 과정에서 또 다른 재능도 발휘 할 수 있었다. 앙상블 공연을 통해 병원환자들과 환우들에게 위로가 되는 음악을 연주해줄 수 있음에 보람을 느끼고 훗날 이 활동을 추억하고자 이번 음반작업에도 참여했다. 며칠 밤을 꼬박 새다시피 했던 음반작업은 육체적으로 너무 힘든 경험이었으나 친구들과 함께여서 즐겁게 마무리 할 수 있었다. 바쁜 시기지만 해외에 나가있는 친구들이 해마다 들어와 멋진 공연을 할 수 있게 한국외국인학교 내에서도 블루피닉스 활동을 열심히 유지할 계획이며 몇 년 뒤 모두 세계 각지에 나가게 되는 그때에도 여름이면 모여 블루피닉스의 이름으로 연주 할 수 있기를 바란다고 밝혔다. 

김준형(Jacob Kim) - 비올라 / Korea International School
블루피닉스에서 제일 최근 입단한 멤버로 활동 기간은 1년 정도이다. 학교에서 주 3회 비올라를 연습하고 연주를 위해 개인 연습을 많이 하는 편이다. 음악이라는 이름으로 병원 환자나 장애인들에게 즐거움을 주는 이벤트를 하며 또래들과 동료애를 쌓는 것에 크게 만족한다고 한다. 비올라는 연주자가 액션을 곁들여 연주할 수 있는 악기이며, 바이올린보다 음색이 중후하고 첼로 사이의 공백을 채우는 역할이라 선택했다고 한다. 또한 개개인이 각자의 악기에 열정을 갖고 꾸준히 연습하는 점에서 자극을 받으며 더 열심히 할 수 있기에, 블루피닉스의 실력이 점점 향상되고 있다고 전한다. 김준형은 여러 악기 멤버들과 합주하면서 악기의 장점과 특징을 더 잘 알 수 있게 되었고, 블루피닉스와 함께 하면서 진로를 음악 프로듀서로 정했다고 한다. 앞으로 자신의 음악을 할 때 이러한 경험이 반영되어 더 좋은 연주를 경험하고 창조해 낼 수 있을 것이라고 자신한다. 

박별오름(Byulorm Angela Park) - 첼로 / Korea International School
현재 블루피닉스의 리더로서 2010년 콰르텟 원년 멤버이며 블루피닉스를 고등학교 내의 어엿한 클럽으로 만들어 키워 가고 있다. 블루피닉스는 학생들이 주도가 되어서 하는 클럽이라 연주회 기획, 곡 선정, 악보 찾기, 편곡, 포스터 등 모든 것을 스스로 하는데 리더로서 첼로 연주 뿐 아니라 전반적인 디렉터의 역할을 감당한다. 부족한 면들을 채우기 위해 여름 방학동안 유명한 지휘자 선생님들을 찾아가 수업을 받으며 앙상블에 대한 공부를 하고, 편곡 작업에 더 전문적인 지식을 얻고 싶어서 올해는 뮤직 띠어리 수업을 선택해서 듣는 등 블루피닉스에 대한 열정을 보여주고 있다. 지금도 기억나는 것이 초등학교 4학년 ‘반짝반짝 작은 별’이 첫 레퍼토리였는데 그 영상을 다시 보면 부끄럽기도 하지만 지금은 ‘베토벤’, ‘보로딘’, ‘슈베르트’ 등 다양한 클래식 곡을 연주할 수 있게 성장한 우리가 대견하기도 하다. 어머니와 봉사를 다니던 애니아의 집 친구들의 휠체어를 밀어주며 아이들이 음악에 반응하고 신나게 몸을 움직이는 것을 보며 그 친구들에게 연주를 들려주고 싶은 마음에 자선 콘서트를 기획한 것이 시작이 되었는데, 그 마음이 모이고 커져서 10년 가까이 음악을 함께 한 친구들과 올 여름 음반을 내게 되었다. 그동안의 블루피닉스의 성장과 진통이 깃들인 앨범이라 너무 애착이 가고 보람을 느끼며 이 앨범을 통해 우리의 활동이 홍보가 되어서 더 많은 장애인과 환자들의 재활과 삶에 많은 분이 함께 해주시기를 기대해 본다. 그 동안 친구들과 방학마다 모여 연주를 했던 것처럼 멤버들이 성인이 되어서도 아름다운 마음을 간직하고 아프고 힘든 사람과 함께 사는 세상을 만들기 위해  연주와 더 많은 달란트로 나눌 수 있기를 바란다.

전금호(Eric Chun) - 더블베이스, 베이스기타 / Hotchkiss School
블루피닉스 앙상블 원년멤버로 앙상블곡 전반에 편곡을 담당하고 있으며, 더블베이스와 베이스기타를 연주하고 있다. 편곡과 악기 파트 변경 등의 역할을 맡아 과감하게 악기의 파트를 바꿔 보기도 하고 나름 다양한 새로운 시도를 해보며 연주의 재미를 부여하기 위해 노력했다. 그리고 이번 앨범에서는 특히 앨범에 들어가는 곡 중에 저작권법에 저촉되는 곡이 있는지 리서치하며 저작권 관련 공부도 하게 되어 매우 보람차게 생각하고 있다. 더블베이스의 장점은 악기 중에서 대체 불가능한 저음을 지녔다는 것이다. 멜로디 파트의 현악기는 건반, 관악기 중 비슷한 역할을 하는 악기로 대체할 수 있으나, 반면에 더블베이스는 음색의 특징이 분명해 없으면 그 차이를 느낄 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 멜로디를 풍성하게 백업하며 곡의 뼈대를 담당한다는 차이점이 있다고 한다. 자선 공연은 친구들과 즐겁게 음악을 만들고 연주하면서 무언가를 창조하여 많은 사람들에게 기쁨을 주기에 만족스럽다고 한다. 매년 보바스 자선공연에 참가하는 멤버로서 여름과 겨울마다 이런 공연을 친구들과 계속할 수 있기를 바란다. 앞으로 클래식 외에도 재즈, 팝 등 다양한 장르로 블루피닉스의 공연을 다채롭게 만들 것이라고 한다.  

황규리(Gyuri Hwang) – 플루트, 피콜로 / Korea International School
블루피닉스 공연을 하기 전부터  KIS RCY 삼성병원 음악봉사 단원으로서  트리오를 구성해 연주봉사를 하고 있었으며 그러던 중 교내 블루피닉스클럽을 같이 만들어  음악봉사를 하자는 제안을 받았다고 한다. 그래서 트리오 친구들과 같이 5번째 정기연주회 (Summer Refresh) 부터 참가하게 되었다. 음악이 좋아서, 친구가 좋아서 함께하게 되었지만, 무엇보다도 지금은 우리의 연주를 듣고 웃고 호응해주며 다음 연주회를 기다려 주는 사람들이 있어서 내일을 기약하게 된다고 한다. 학교에서는 현악기와 관악기 수업이 따로 진행되고 있는 바람에 오케스트라 연주에 대한 로망이 있었는데 블루피닉스는 마치 미니 오케스트라 느낌이 들어서 또한 매력이 있다고 한다. 플루트와 피콜로는 리듬, 속도감, 높은 음역대를 가지고 있는 악기로서 솔로파트와  바이올린을 서포터 하고 있다. 가장 인상에 남는 공연은 애니아의 집 (중증장애아동 요양시설) 에서 열린 6번째 정기 연주회 (Christmas Charity Concert) 라고 한다. 몸도 정신도 온전치 못한 아이들이 우리의 연주를 들으며 몸을 좌우로 흔들며 행복해하는 모습을 보며 음악은 사랑의 또 다른 이름이라는 문구가 생각난다고 한다. 

이현승 (Hyun Seung Lee) - 플루트 / Korea International School
남들에 비해 비교적 좋은 조건에서 공부하고 음악을 한 친구들이 모였기에, 자신이 가진 것을 남에게 환원하기 위한 공연을 하는 것이 블루피닉스의 존재가치라고 생각하고 있다. 긴장을 많이 하는 편이라 스스로 연습량을 정해서 열심히 연습하며 극복했고, 친구들의 요청으로 합류한 2년 동안 관객들의 박수를 받으며 많이 성장했고 보람을 느낀다고 한다. 처음 악기를 시작한 것은 자신의 의지가 아니었지만, 무대에 설수록 연주의 기쁨을 알게 되고 연습과 공연에 대한 열망이 강해졌다. 플루트는 빠른 곡과 느린 곡을 모두 표현할 수 있는 맑은 음색의 관악기이며 연주할 때는 빠른 곡을 더 선호하는 편이다. 플루트 멤버는 주로 멜로디 파트를 맡지만, 현악 쿼텟에서 시작된 앙상블인 블루피닉스에서 처음으로 백그라운드 파트를 맡으며 새로운 매력을 느꼈다고 한다. 그리고 친구들이 가진 연주 능력을 모아 음악으로 즐거움을 전한다는 것이 늘 행복하기에, 고등학교를 졸업한 후에도 악기를 놓지 않고 친구들과 공연하면서 꾸준히 실력을 키우고 싶다는 뜻을 전했다. 

김민호(Jimmy Kim) - 오보에 / Peddie School
미국 유학생이자 3년 차 멤버로서 관악기 파트가 필요하다는 리더 박별오름의 제안으로 입단한 이래 방학 때마다 귀국하여 친구들과 합주를 하고 있다. 비전공자이지만 오보에를 전공한 어머니에게 배워 수준급의 실력을 키울 수 있었다고 한다. 오케스트라에서 1-2명에 불과하지만 중요한 음정을 맞추는 파트이기도 한 오보에는 강렬하고 튀는 음색을 갖고 있으며, 솔로파트의 중요한 부분을 연주할 수 있는 악기이기도 하다. 입단 직후부터 중요한 파트를 맡아 처음에는 긴장하기도 했지만, KIS의 악기 연주팀들 중 가장 유명한 블루피닉스답게 잘 적응했다고 한다. 매년 연주 연습과 공연을 거치면서 실력향상을 하는 쾌감에 연주를 계속하게 되는 것 같다고 한다. 멤버들과 악기의 종류가 늘어 갈수록 공연에서 특이하고 다양한 곡을 시도할 수 있어서, 대학에 진학한 후에도 블루피닉스와 합주를 계속해 나갈 생각이라고 한다.

박세환(션 박) - 클라리넷
블루피닉스에는 악기 연주를 좋아해서 친구들과 같이 하는 것이 재미있을 것 같아 지난 8월 입단했다고 한다. 이후 에니아의 집 자선공연을 크게 치르며 자선봉사의 좋은 의미와 동시에, 음악을 좋아하는 친구들이 음악 만들기를 즐기는 팀이라고 블루피닉스를 정의한다. 손을 다친 후 재활 목적으로 클라리넷 연주를 시작한 지 올해로 8년째라고 한다. 언제나 연주한다는 행위에서 기쁨을 느끼고 있으며, 레슨과 독학으로 꾸준히 실력을 다지고 있다. 정갈한 음색을 내기까지 어려운 만큼, 성공하면 그만큼 멋진 소리를 낼 수 있는 클라리넷을 제일 좋아한다고 전한다. 팀 내에서 멜로디, 하모니, 베이스 파트를 모두 맡고 있으며, 다른 이들의 음악을 자기 것으로 만들어 누군가를 즐겁게 한다는 공연의 목적에 충실하다. 개인적으로는 앞으로 새로운 멤버들을 받아들여서 재미있는 공연을 계속 해 나갈 수 있기를 바라고 있다. 

이상윤((Alexander Lee) - 트롬본 / St. Paul's School
현재 미국 뉴햄프셔주(NH) 보딩스쿨 세인폴(St.paul's school)에 재학 중으로, 블루피닉스에서 3년째 함께 활동하고 있다. 캐나다, 중국 학교에서 비올라를 연주하다가 관악기에 관심이 생겨 6학년 때 KIS로 전학 오면서 처음으로 트롬본을 접하게 되었다. 트롬본은 슬라이드로 핑거 포지션을 맞추는 악기이기에 정확한 음정을 내는 것이 다소 어렵지만, 한 가지 포지션에서 입술 조절에 따라 여러 음을 낼 수 있는 것이 이 악기의 매력이기도 하다. 기숙학교에 다니고 있어서 학기 중에는 학교 밖으로 나가 자선 콘서트를 여는데 어려움이 있는데, 이렇게 방학 때마다 친구들과 한뜻으로 공연을 기획하고 준비하는 것이 바쁘고 힘든 유학생활에 힐링이 되는 뜻 깊은 시간이 되는 것 같다. 그동안 병원과 복지관의 자선 연주를 하면서 좀 더 많은 이들과 음악을 통한 교감을 가지고 작은 기쁨을 나눌 수 있는 방법이 있지 않을까 생각하다가 음반작업을 추진하게 되었다. 이번 앨범 판매 수익과 음원 수입으로 블루피닉스 활동이 발전되면 한국에서뿐만 아니라, 더 나아가 학교 주변 뉴햄프셔 지역에 중증장애아들을 위한 기부 활동으로 확대해나갈 계획을 갖고 있다.

류영상(Youngsang Ryu) - 피아노 / Korea International School
유학 간 친구를 대신해 블루피닉스에 합류한 지 벌 써 세 번째 여름을 함께 한 영상은 학교 수업시간엔 바이올린을 연주하지만 블루피닉스 활동 때는 어릴 때부터 연습한 피아노로 참여하고 있다. 첫 보바스 여름 콘서트가 가장 기억에 남는다는 그는, 첫 봉사 공연이기도 했고 노인요양병원이니 연세 많고, 몸이 불편한 분들이 클래식 연주를 어떻게 받아들일까에 대한 궁금증으로 걱정도 됐었다고 전했다. 
하지만 연주 내내 호응도 좋고 연주에 대한 칭찬도 받아 보람됐던 기억이 있다고 한다. 피아노의 특성상 개인 악기가 아니다보니 장소와 상황에 따라 악기 상태가 달라 예민해질 수 있지만 정기 봉사 공연 때마다 항상 클래식 연주에 기분 좋은 반응으로 응답을 받아 감사함을 느낀다고 밝혔다. 
이런 점들 때문에 다른 연주회나 협연 등 개인 활동과는 또 다른 의미로 소중한 경험을 쌓고 있다는 영상은 올해, 그동안 친구들과 열심히 활동했던 결과물이자 새로운 시작인 음반제작까지 하게 돼 더욱 뜻 깊은 여름을 보내고 있다고 한다.

Blue Phoenix is a charity ensemble group of Korea International School (KIS)
Formed in December 2010 at Korea International School, Blue Phoenix grew to be a classical ensemble group in 2014 and successfully held its 7th summer charity performance ‘Serendipity’ at Bobath Memorial Concert Hall on 21 August. The 12 non-music majored students who loved music very much and can play an instrument or two gave their very best and passion in the ensemble. The performance this time was meaningful as it was held at Bobath Memorial Concert Hall built in commemoration of the British Bobath couple who devoted their lives to patients with cerebral nerve problems. Blue Phoenix played Paganini, Borodin and Shostakovich as well as repertory of pop music and movie OST on the day. Blue Phoenix has given many concerts for the last 7 years at various memorial and charity events including memorial concert for Sewol ferry victims in 2015, Bobath Hospital dream concert, the concert <We Are One> organized for North Korean defector youth and ‘Aenea’s House’ Christmas charity concert. September this year, Blue Phoenix has released its first album and the members are ambitious to grow the group as a global youth ensemble. 

Victoria Han on first and solo violin (Milton Academy in Boston)
Han is one of the founding members and the leader of Blue Phoenix and plays the first violin and solo violin. She says that the charm of violin comes from the sensitive and truthful touch of strings. She is 16 and studying at Milton Academy in Boston but visits Korea during the summer and winter vacations for Blue Phoenix. She loved music and started playing musical instruments when she was a child. She carried on her passion to gather her friends who love music to launch Blue Phoenix in 2010. She says that she feels really rewarded when Blue Phoenix gave a charity performance at Aenea’s House, a center for severely-handicapped children, and receive a shout of glee from them. The concert takes place at the house every winter. She praises highly of the 4 year long charity performance at Bobath Memorial Concert Hall and hopes that Blue Phoenix will keep rolling the talent donation as long as it lasts. It is notable that the members of Blue Phoenix have accumulated their experience and knowhow for the last 10 years. Taking the most of its advantage, Blue Phoenix is pushing forward establishing a non-profit organization with a goal to make contribution to severely-handicapped children and elderly patients in the world. Han says that she hopes to carry on this good deed with the members even after graduation.

Sarah Yoon on violin (St. Paul’s School)
Yoon also is one of the founding members of Blue Phoenix. She played violin in a string quartet for 10 years and says that she finds a great pleasure in ensemble and orchestra music. She organized a charity concert with her friends and the solo concert she had when she was a 6th grade student was an unforgettable challenge as it involved hiring a concert hall and ticketing. It is regretful she only can make time for Blue Phoenix during vacations since she moved her base to Fay School in Boston and St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire. In Fay School, she was the concert master of the orchestra and learned team spirit. Violin is a sensitive instrument that one must practice every day to keep the tone but Yoon feels a sense of accomplishment and truthfulness the more she practices. Her talent in art made her design the CD cover of the album in cooperation with Felicia Lee and Hannah Yang. Yoon and her school mate Alexander Lee is planning to donate part of the profits generated by selling the album to local organizations for severely-handicapped people in New Hampshire. Yoon says that she would like to show her gratitude to her friends who worked together in both good and bad times and hopes to carry on the performance on the streets of Hongdae in the future. 

Felicia Lee on violin (Korea International School)
Lee joined Blue Phoenix on its advantage of music combined with charity activities. She used to play solo and was a member of a school orchestra and learned consideration to other members and harmony to the music from quartet. Being a member of Blue Phoenix required a considerable amount of time and energy but she received valuable experience in return. Lee says that the joint performance with a choir team in front of the whole school and the former US ambassador to Korea Mark Lippert as most memorable while the performances at Bobath Hospital touched her heart by the respond the patient audience gave to the team. Encouraged by this, Lee formed a club with Byulorm Angela Park and Hannah Yang to carry on the meaningful activities with more friends. Lee was convinced that she and her friends could provide practical help on the occasion of the performances at Aenea’s House and felt that the establishment of the non-profit organization would play the foundation for more good deeds. She took part in designing the album alongside Hannah Yang and Sarah Yoon and said that the friendship has become firmer through busy schedules of recording, filming and designing. Lee hopes that they will keep continue the performance even after graduation. 

Hannah Yang on viola (Korea International School) 
Yang was suggested to join Blue Phoenix 5 years ago to fill up the absence of viola in the team. She took the stage within 3 months of joining Blue Phoenix and after one year’s hard training became a member of the quartet where Byulorm Angela Park and Felicia Lee are members. She also remembers the performance in front of the whole school and the former US ambassador Mark Lippert as unforgettable. She played on the suggestion of the choir team in the school and found a great pleasure to meet members of Blue Phoenix and to organize concerts together during summer and winter vacations. She proved her talent in making pamphlets for concert and actively participated in making the album during which she rarely could be able to have a sleep. Though physically tired, she enjoyed the whole process. She hopes to carry on the performance at Blue Phoenix every summer after graduation.  

Jacob Kim on viola (Korea International School)
As the latest member of Blue Phoenix, Kim has played for about a year. He practices viola 3 times a week in addition to individual practice. He finds a great pleasure at the fact that music can be a tool to make patients and disabled feel happy and to build friendship with colleague players. He chose viola for its role to fill up the space between violin and cello and players can also add a motion during the play. He says that all members of Blue Phoenix are working really hard and this is the driving force of the group and he personally expanded his understanding of other instruments. To push forward his passion in music, he has decided to be a music producer in the future and he is confident to say that he could be able to make something creative based on the experience at Blue Phoenix. 

Byulorm Angela Park on cello (Korea International School)
She is the leader of Blue Phoenix and the founding member of the quartet in 2010. She has contributed to growing Blue Phoenix as a renowned music group of the school. Blue Phoenix is run by students and therefore all the administration from planning and choosing the songs to music score, arrangement and making a poster is done by the members. Park’s role as the leader is to direct the overall administration. She pays a visit to renowned conductors on a regular basis to learn about ensemble and recently has taken a music theory course to deepen her knowledge in arrangement. She remembers the moment when she played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star when she was a 4th grade elementary school student but feel proud to be able to play Beethoven, Borodin and Schubert now. Park and her mother used to visit Aenea’s House and inspired by the children responding to the music with joy she organized a regular charity concert which has been carried on for 10 years. The result was the album recently released. She feels very attached to the album and proud of what she has accomplished. She hopes that the album will play a role to spread the good deed of Blue Phoenix so that more patients and disabled can benefit from beautiful melody of music. Like members of Blue Phoenix always gather together during the vacations, Park hopes that the gathering will go on as long as it lasts with a virtuous purpose of making a better society through music donation. 

Eric Chun on double bass (Hotchkiss School)
As the founding member of Blue Phoenix, Chun directs overall arrangement of the music alongside playing double bass and bass guitar in the group. He boldly tries to change the arrangement and instrumental parts in order to add excitement and fun while carrying out a checkup whether the music used for the performance infringes copyrights. He says that the advantage of playing double bass is that there is no alternative considering its tone and sound unlike the melody-driven instruments such as violin, piano and pipes. Double bass riches the melody and plays the bone of the music. He feels satisfied on the fact that music can give pleasure not only to players but also to listeners and it is even better if the performance is for people in need. As the arranger of the music, he plans to expand the scope of music genre to jazz and pop over classical in near future. 

Gyuri Hwang on flute and piccolo (Korea International School)
Hwang played in a trio of KIS RCY Samsung Medical Center and was offered a place at Blue Phoenix. She joined from the 5th regular concert (Summer Refresh). She joined Blue Phoenix because she loved music and friends but she now is more excited about the fact that music can make people in need happy who are already enthusiastic for the next performance. She also finds Blue Phoenix charming as she feels a sense of orchestration when in the group. Flute and piccolo have characteristics of rhythm, speed and high pitches and they support solo parts and violin. She remembers the 6th regular performance (Christmas Charity Concert) held at Aenea’s House as most memorable. Watching severely-handicapped children swinging their body in accordance with the music made her filled with love. 

Hyun Seung Lee on flute (Korea International School)
Lee thinks that the members of Blue Phoenix are privileged and it will therefore be the value of Blue Phoenix to return what they have received to society through music. He thinks that he is a kind of person who gets anxious a lot and he overcomes this by practicing hard. He now feels rewarded for what he has achieved in the group for the last 2 years. It was not his own will that he grabbed the flute but became stronger and stronger the more he practiced and stood on the stage. Flute is an instrument that can digest both slow and fast tempos in crystal clear tone but he prefers fast tempo when in playing. He especially was charmed by the instrument by laying the background instead of the common high pitch melody part the flute usually plays. It is always happy for him to play alongside his friends and in front of people in need so he hopes to carry on the performance after graduation.

Jimmy Kim on oboe (Peddie School)
He joined Blue Phoenix on recommendation of Byulorm Angela Park. He has carried on his studies in the US for 3 years and is enjoying being part of the group on vacations. He learned oboe from his oboe majored mother and has secured professional level technique. Oboe plays an important part when it comes to tuning and only 1 or 2 persons plays the instrument in an orchestra. It has strong and popping tone and can play the important part of a solo. He was anxious when he first joined the group but boldly built up his confidence and skills through continuous practice and performances which now have become the driving force. The more instruments and members the more tries of new genres, says he and hopes to keep carrying on the performance as long as it lasts. 

Sean Park on clarinet (Korea International School)
He joined Blue Phoenix last August as he thought it might be fun to play music with friends. It was when he played in one of the Aenea’s House performances that he felt the joy of playing music for people in need. He started to play the clarinet when he hurt his hand for rehabilitation and it has been 8 years now. He finds a great pleasure at playing the instrument and upgrades his technique through lessons and self-study. It is really difficult for clarinet players to make neat sound but once achieved the sense of the reward cannot be compared with anything else. He takes the role to take melody, harmony and bass parts in the group and is talented at making other’s music to his own style to make audience pleased. He hopes to invite more members and to keep carrying on the performance. 

Alexander Lee on trombone (St. Paul’s School)
Lee currently studies at St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire, US and has played in Blue Phoenix for 3 years. He played viola at schools in Canada and China and first grabbed trombone when he moved to Korea International School at the 6th grade. You need to use slide to place the finger position so it is quite difficult to make accurate pitch. But the charm is that it can create a variety of tones at the single position depending on the adjustment of the lips. He finds playing in Blue Phoenix on vacations a sense of healing as he can engage himself in the preparation procedure for performance. If the sales of the album can contribute to development of Blue Phoenix, he is thinking of expanding the charity activities for severely-handicapped children in New Hampshire. 

Youngsang Ryu on piano (Korea International School)
Three summers have passed since he joined Blue Phoenix instead of his friend who went abroad to study. He plays the violin in the class but the piano in the group as he started to practice the instrument since he was a child. He remembers the first Bobath concert in summer most memorable as it was his first charity performance. He actually was worried how their performance might sound to elderly and physically difficult people. But the worry turned to pride when the audience gave positive respond and compliment. As a result, being part of Blue Phoenix gives him a different experience and touching from other concerts and orchestration he is participating. He says that he feels really good to have released the album as it was the result of their passionate playing and friendship.
