통제와 보호를 받다 자율과 책임을 요구받는 대학 새내기들은, 고교 때와 달리 ‘극점프’ 수준의 변화를 겪으며 뒤늦게 자신의 전공이 적성과 다르다는 사실을 깨닫고 전과, 반수를 시도하는 경우가 많다. 전국에서도 드문 무전공 선발, 2학기 말 전공선택이라는 커리큘럼의 조선대학교 자유전공학부는 이러한 학생들의 고민을 해결하고 적성에 맞는 분야로 이끌어 주는 학과이다. 국문학자로서 다양한 장르의 글 쓰는 노하우를 지도하며 학부를 이끌고 있는 신정숙 교수는, 모든 학문의 기반인 인문학을 통한 후학양성과 지식의 대중화를 위한 교양서 발간에 심혈을 기울이고 있다. 

소수정예 교수진이 학생의 적성 찾기 길잡이가 되는 ‘평생지도교수제’ 도입
교육자였다가 뒤늦게 화가로 전향한 칸딘스키, 가수에서 국제변호사가 된 이소은 등 자신의 진정한 적성을 찾아 떠난 인물들의 이야기는 전공을 바꾸려는 학생들에게 도전의식을 불러일으키지만, 도중에 궤도를 바꾸게 된 이들은 남들보다 뒤처질 두려움 또한 느끼게 된다. 이러한 고민은 조선대학교 기초교육대학 자유전공학부에 오면 풀리게 된다. 2009년 독립학부에서 시작해 계열과 전공에 무관하게 학생을 선발하며, 이들이 전공교수와 책임교수의 지도하에 강의를 듣고 10-11월에 간호/치/의/약대와 사범대 등 특수학과를 제외한 여러 전공 중 원하는 것을 선택할 기회가 주어지는 자유전공학부에서 1학년을 보낼 수 있기 때문이다. 자유전공학부의 신정숙 교수는 국문학을 전공한 인문학자로서, 토론과 발표를 기반으로 각 전공마다 필요한 독해와 작문 능력을 4년 째 지도하고 있다. 신 교수는 인문, 수학, 컴퓨터 등 수요가 높은 5개 전공계열의 책임지도교수 아래 자유전공학부 교수들이 각각 소수인원의 학생들을 담당하게 된다고 전한다. 따라서 1년간의 집중관리기간 동안, 교수들은 고3담임의 연장선상에서 취업과 진로지도는 물론 학생이 여러 학문분야를 창의적으로 공부할 수 있도록 독려한다. 이를 ‘평생지도교수제’라고 하며, 신 교수는 현재 2명의 학생을 배정받아 자신의 적성을 찾고, 인문학적 소양을 함양할 수 있도록 지도하고 있다고 한다. 자유전공학부에서는 다양한 인문·사회계열과 이공계열에 대한 전공기초개론을 들을 수 있다. 그래서 특정 분야를 충분히 이해하고 관심을 갖게 되면 그 분야를 전공으로 고를 수 있는 것이다. 또한 지도교수의 전공과 자신이 관심 있는 전공이 일치하지 않더라도 타 전공기초 교수에게도 해당 지식과 조언을 얻을 수 있어서, 수평적이고 열린 분위기에서 진정한 적성을 찾을 수 있는 것이 큰 장점이다. 

다양한 전공에서 필요한 궁극의 독해와 글쓰기 지도해 인문학 소양과 경쟁력 길러
인문학은 사회구성원들의 철학을 지탱한다고 할 만큼 중요한 학문이다. 그리고 학교 성적만큼 ‘자소서’가 입사에 중요해지고 직장에서의 프리젠테이션, 대학원의 논문 작성 등 언어능력이 각광받으면서, 유명 대기업에서도 인문·국문학도들에게 가산점을 주기도 한다. 현재 신 교수는 대세에 맞게 1,2학기에 걸쳐 토론과 발표에 적합한 의사소통방식, 그리고 전문 글쓰기 방식을 가르치는 교양필수과목 <사고와 표현1,2>를 담당하고 있다. 신 교수는 인문예체능계의 보고서, 이공계의 실험 보고서와 연구제안서 등의 작법에는 큰 차이가 있으며, 요구되는 글쓰기방식도 다르다고 언급한다. 그래서 신 교수는 해당 전공의 특성을 고려하여 효과적인 글쓰기 방식을 연구하고, 학생들에게 꼭 필요한 글쓰기 형식을 가르친다. 신 교수는 이러한 글쓰기 교육이 학생들의 전공 선택 및 학업에도 큰 도움이 된다고 말했다. 지난 해 2학기에는 신 교수가 담당했던 정보통신과 학생들이 기술개발제안서 대회에 나가 입상하기도 했다고 전했다. 이러한 경력이 취업 시 도움이 되기 때문에, 학생들은 이 교과목을 통해 각 분야에 필요한 문장력과 이해도를 기르고 스펙 쌓기에도 도움이 되는 윈&윈 식 시너지를 얻을 수 있다. 신 교수는 이렇게 전공에 대한 능력은 기본이고, 새로움을 두려워하지 않고 부딪혀 돌파하는 능력, 거기에 인성을 더하여 배려와 협업을 익히면 사회에 진출해서도 자기 분야의 리더가 될 수 있다고 한다. 따라서 “언제나 교육현장에서도 사회를 향한 배려와 윤리의식 및 인성교육을 강조하고 있다”고 신 교수는 덧붙였다. 

흥미와 상식 갖춘 지적 교양총서, <식민지인들, 온천에서 옷을 벗다>로 첫 선을 보여
연대 국문과 박사학위를 수료했으며, 3년 전부터 문화강좌 강연 및 대중문화총서를 기획하고 있는 신 교수는 인문학자들 간에 전문적 학술연구를 공유하는 것도 중요하지만, 연구자들이 대중들이 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 교양 전문서적을 출판하는 것도 매우 의미있는 일이라고 말했다. <을화>로 1982년 노벨문학상 후보에 오를 만큼 문학적 가치가 높은 작가 ‘김동리’ 소설의 심리적 기제에 대한 여러 연구논문을 쓰고 있는 신 교수는, 국제 학술지에 게재를 목표로 하는 수준 높은 연구와 더불어 대중들을 위한 교양 전문서적 집필에도 착수했다고 밝혔다. 이는 2014년부터 뜻을 같이 하는 50여 명의 학회 관계자들과 함께, 각자 자신의 전문 연구 분야와  관련된 교양도서를 저술해 대중문화총서를 만들고자 함이다. 신 교수는 논문 3-4개 분량의  총서로, ‘온천’에 연관된 문학작품을 선정해 당대의 문화와 사회현상을 소개하는 <식민지인들, 온천에서 옷을 벗다>를 내년 초 출간 준비 중이다. 신 교수에 따르면 춘원은 동래 온천에서의 문화생활을 느긋하게 고백하기도 했으며 이때의 경험을 훗날 영화화 된 <그 여자의 일생>이라는 소설로 쓰기도 했다. 이처럼 일제강점기 모던걸들과 한량갑부들이 모이는 공간이자 1920~30년대 식민자본주의 하에서 유흥과 여가의 메카가 된 곳이 바로 온천이다. 21세기에도 찜질방과 불가마 문화로 계승되고 있는 당대의 온천욕과, 여기에서 비롯된 다양한 문화, 일탈, 요식행위가 지닌 역사/사회적 의미를 흥미롭게 서술한 이 책은 우리의 역사와 문화를 온천이라는 소재를 통해 재미있게 공부할 수 있는 교양서가 될 것이다. 마지막으로 대학에서 인재 양성과 함께 문학연구를 통해 다양한 인간사의 의미와 가치를 조명하는 학자로 남겠다는 신 교수는, 앞으로도 한국의 경제적 성장에 걸맞게 문화·예술 분야가 발전할 수 있도록 자신의 소명을 다하겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

Introducing ‘lifelong academic advisor system’
The stories of those who boldly changed their career in respond to the calling of their nature seem to encourage many students for a challenge. But they also fear whether the challenge leave them behind of others. If you think you are one of those, you do not need to worry anymore at Great Chosun Human University Free Majors Department. Opening as a single department in 2009, students can register for the department regardless their majors. The students attend classes of various majors for a year before deciding their major during October and November except the departments of nurse, dentist, medicine, pharmacy and education. Professor Shin Jung-sook of the department majored in Korean Literature and has taught students reading and writing skills needed for each major for the last 4 years. The responsible professors of each major manage and encourage their students for creative studies during the first academic year before making the final decision on their major. The system is called ‘lifelong academic advisor system’ and shin is assigned to help two students find their aptitude and improve their ability at the moment. The department covers basics of humanity and society as well as science and engineering so that students can understand a certain area deeper before deciding their major. 

Reading and writing abilities improve one’s competitiveness
Humanities are the core studies about members of our society. Also, one’s reading and writing abilities are very important for making a letter of self-introduction, presentation and essays and dissertations. Shin’s <Thinking and Expression 1 and 2> responds to this requirement effectively. Shin points out that each report requires each different form and style according to its purpose so students must learn effective writing skills. She proved her teaching capabilities by making her communications students winning a prize at a technology development suggestion competition held in the second semester two years ago. She says that students equipped with reading and writing skills can play like a boost-up of one’s major. “In addition, one’s consciousness on humanities and consideration to others are as important as the knowledge of one’s major” said Shin. 

Preparing to release <Colonial People, Taking Off Their Clothes at Hot Springs>
Shin obtained a PhD in Korean Literature at Yonsei University. She has given lectures on culture and prepared to write a related book for the last 3 years. According to Shin, studying humanities is important but sharing the studies with the public is more so. Shin has published a number of papers on psychological mechanism of Kim Tong-ni, a Korean writer, and she is ambitious to write humanities books that can be introduced on international academic journals. This is part of effort of Shin and her 50 colleague members of the society making a cultural series book carried on since 2014. Shin also is collecting literary works themed on ‘hot spring’ and is preparing to publish <Colonial People, Taking Off Their Clothes at Hot Springs>, a book on cultural and social phenomenon of the time, earl next year. According to Shin, Chunwon confessed about his life at Dongnae Hot Spring and made the story into a novel <Life of the Woman>. Korea in the 20s and 30s, hot springs were the places where modern women and playboy millionaire gathered together to enjoy the time. Shin’s book <Colonial People, Taking Off Their Clothes at Hot Springs> connects the hot springs in the time to the cultures of Korean dry sauna today. We can see the other side of our history and culture based on the theme ‘hot spring’ through this book. When asked about future plan, Shin said that she would keep carrying on her studies on human histories and their meanings and values as a way to make contribution to development of Korean culture and art.
