Prosthesis is the hope of those who have lost body parts
Efforts to include prosthesis in medical insurance and commercializing 3D equipment
Director Lee Seung-ho of the Korea Prosthesis Laboratory

The pioneer of Korean prosthesis
The Korea Prosthesis Laboratory opened the door in 1979. It has made various prosthetic body parts for those who were born without part of the body or lost it by accident. Director Lee Seung-ho started to learn the producing skill of prosthesis on the occasion of seeing his acquaintance fought in the Vietnam War but came back wounded and ended his life in misery. Lee served as the chief director of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics Korea and gave special lectures at Hanseo University and Korea National University of Welfare while exerting efforts in introducing advanced prosthetic technologies to Korea. Lee’s talent in making the equipment is well known: he made a prosthetic arm that can move all five fingers including the wrist while the overseas one was limited to only 3. Also the one he obtained a patent with has realized the wrinkles, finger nails, joints and finger prints and skin color through silicon coloring. He introduced the prophage control equipment of the artificial electric prosthesis for the first time in Korea especially for those who value the elements of esthetics alongside practicality. Lee’s social contribution also is worth mentioning: he actively engaged himself in talent donations and the promotion of the Disability Discrimination Act. In recognition of his contribution, Lee received a presidential prize and Order of Civil Merit, Pomegranate Medal while listing the business in Innobiz and venture enterprise. For this reason, he is received as the pioneer of Korean prosthesis. In terms of the making process, Lee carries out a consulting to find out the functions needed at first hand and makes a visit to the people who cannot move when necessary. He came to know the fact the armless body can destroy the balance and cause phantom pain and disc and thus focused on development of prosthesis that can be controlled by the nerves of the body. Also, the 3D prosthesis, soon to be released, will be offered at great price and performance and the device works according to the muscle sensors. So far, Lee has made more than 900 prosthesis including donations of the customized equipment to foreign workers in Korea as well as disabled people in Ethiopia and Mongolia. Touched by Lee’s devotion, Lee Seung-min, the son of Lee who majored in music, currently is learning the skill from his father. When asked about his future plan, Lee said that he was ambitious to commercialize 3D prosthesis while actively promoting prosthesis to be included in medical insurance that has been ongoing for 10 years. The Korea Prosthesis Laboratory boasts 38 years of history and it will keep functioning as the hope of Korean prosthesis and of the people of the world who suffer from loss of body parts.
