Fun with nature, A scene of ‘Wood education’ where play is learning
Kang Yeong-sik, president of The Wood Kindergarten
‘The wood’ is the origin of endless imagination
The wood involves nature which awakens the five senses of children. ‘Wood’ is the best playground for children in that it is possible to build creativity and sensibility through diverse plays in nature and take care of their body and mind beautifully. President Kang Yeong-sik, also professor of infant education at Choongnam University graduate school of education, established ‘The Wood,” the first wood kindergarten in Sejong city after a long inquiry in an effort to embody the joyous and happy education of growing in the midst of running and playing to their heart’s content in the wood, and the true education of accepting nature as it is and learning the picture of life in harmony.
The ‘Wood education’ started from the naturalist educational thinking of German infant educator Friedrich Froebel. It is the main philosophy of wood education to make one’s own play in the wood without any restraint including numbers or letters. It is said that about 20 years ago, President Kang Yeong-sik came in contact with wood education through the seminar on wood kindergarten in Germany and saw children in nature to be happy with the wood. He explained, “The wood is the origin of endless creativity for children. Though play in the wood, children can develop cognitive ability and many parts of sociability, creativity and health, etc. earning self-confidence.” Accordingly, wearing two hats of professor at university and running a child care center, he was devoted to studying on wood education for ten years visiting Germany as often as possible. At last, he opened The Wood Kindergarten at Dodam-dong, Sejong city, as a scene to practice wood education in a truer meaning by connecting Noori (world) curriculum and German-like wood play, not a simple experience of wood.
The Wood Kindergarten has ‘Mt. Wonsoo’ behind. It is a low mountain no more than 184.5m above sea level but, with trees grown thickly and a promenade, ecology park and wood experience hall well prepared on a gentle slope, the mountain provides the best environment for wood education, Besides, the interior of five-storied childcare center building is made of natural materials such as pulpwood and ocher, while eco-friendly healthy meals are served for children. The Wood is carrying out appreciation of notable paintings and specialized reading program by age in the morning and, in the daytime it helps children acquire a live knowledge by learning from nature through play and games in nature. “According to Peter Hafner, a professor at Heidelberg Univ, Germany, children receiving wood education show higher imagination, communication skill, concentration, etc than those from ordinary education. I also had an opportunity to verify the fact that children receiving wood education show excellence in diverse aspects including respect for human life, concentration, creativity, leadership and sense of wellbeing through my own combination of a longtime study and actual education.” said president Kang.
“Will carry out true education of hugging children with heart and loving them with soul”
The Wood Kindergarten is carrying out education linking parent and child, infant educational institution and local community through seasonal culture education program focused on wood. It helps children learn an international culture and foreign language naturally from infanthood by building a team of naive speaking teachers who will get by with children. It also directs energies toward developing the infants’ creativity and sensibility with diverse art activities managed by teachers specialized in art, such as nature art, performance, plastic art, etc. President Kang Yeong-sik emphasized, “Education is a far-sighted national policy that determines the future of the society and nation. Furthermore, infant education is by far most important in that it has a great effect on building up children’s values, developing potentials and direction of growth.”
Believing that ‘Education changes man’ he was devoted to studies at 35, a little higher age, assigned to professor of infant pedagogy and has led a life of educator so far by establishing an infant’s educational institution only wanting to teach a beautiful life as a teacher at kindergarten where children can meet their first teacher in their life. His belief as such is exactly delivered to teachers at the kindergarten. President Kang, who shares vision on infant education by carrying out training on teachers weekly, indicated that wood education improved and developed to our real condition, not a simple method of experience imitating the structure of wood education system overseas, must be spread further. He stressed, “I hope the wood education in linkage to Noori curriculum and settlement will make the basis for more children to acquire knowledge of integrative thinking with experience through the wood. To that end, the efforts of teachers who give education at the scene are important but interest and support from a state level is absolutely required.” Since last year, he has performed a positive activity to set up a better policy and educational curriculum through ‘Korea Infant Wood Education Society.’
President Kang Yeong-sik, who is said to mediate on the phrase, ‘Hug them with heart and love then with soul,’ is hoping that this maxim will turn out more teachers who practice love and set an example for children. As researcher and educator, his sincere efforts on infant education will sprout a bright hope for the future of Korea’s education.
