[Art] Artist Yeom Hyo-ran
Exploring psychological symbols of human nature through ‘face’
Face, a channel for emotions and sensitivities of human nature
Not everything we see and believe is always right. Things are changing fluidly and are affected by society and culture. It is impossible for human to be separated from society. All persons look as each individual but they are closely related each other. We judge people, and ourselves, by the face. It is an action to be aware of others and show sympathy in a way to be recognized oneself.
Face is an important part of the body to secure one’s identity in relation with others and it delivers a social meaning or non-verbal messages to others. In the same respect, a picture for Yeom is a channel for emotions and the very starting point of her question about one’s existence. Like the question on existence leaves a trace of thought, Yeom seems to throw a question to human nature like she expressed the world with crack-folded images in her works.
Revealing inner side of a man through deconstruction and division
The various sizes and dispositions of the faces in Yeom’s works arouse overwhelming emotions from appreciators. The monotone faces in her earlier works contain a destructive aspect and one might feel a sense of artistic zeal from them. Yeom’s works are unusual. Face usually is drawn as part of a picture as a complete whole but Yeom gives focus on one image to draw a completely different result.
And for this reason, her works creates somewhat strange or uncomfortable atmosphere. Yet there is a saying that every development comes from discomforts. Yeom’s works arouse various inner feelings of human and lead us to a single story through visible forms of deconstruction and division. She untangles one side of human nature that is standardized in modern society with painful forms. For this reason, the faces in her works are a memory of impression reflected into the reality of our society. It seems as a link of communication in expression of one’s psychology and relations with others.
“We feel many things in relationship with people and the objects surrounded by them. People lead a different life according to their social status and their face directly and concretely represents it. People being inconsistent depending on each situation also can be understood as various aspects of human nature.”
Fostering talented young artists
Yeom is working with many of her pupils. She says that it is not right to emphasize one’s own thought as everybody has different ideas, styles and colors. For this reason, she takes time to help them build their own conception and contents and she feels rewarded by watching them grow and make success. It is also important part of Yeom to find ways to support local artists. She said “I hope more talented local artists will take part, and take initiative, in development of local culture.” Currently, Yeom is preparing a year end exhibition with her pupils. With her continuous effort in creating unique style and in fostering talented young and local artists, Yeom will have a brighter future.
