“Immaculate cleaning comes from professional knowledge and knowhow”
Lee Jung-il, CEO of Dawoo Environment
Located in Buk District, Gwangju, Dawoo Environment has provided immaculate cleaning services to many public institutions, companies and private clients since 2007. The company started to form at the Buk District Job and Rehabilitation Center as a social enterprise with a goal to provide job and independence to vulnerable social groups. It became a corporation in 2007 and obtained a social enterprise certificate in 2010 followed by a women-friendly enterprise certificate in 2014. As the size gets bigger, Dawoo Environment gave a greater focus on improving the appalling work conditions of cleaners. “Most of them are still excluded from the benefit of the 4 Public Insurances or working as full time. This is the point on which we are giving a greater effort at the moment” explained CEO Lee Jung-il of Dawoo Environment. After five years of hard work since its establishment, Dawoo Environment now has more than 100 employees and providing immaculate cleaning services as well as building management services especially in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province. “I think ‘people’ must be the top priority over equipment and technology. The latter two are useless if the people-centered practices and services are missed.” It is also worth mentioning of the rational price and responsible services Dawoo Environment offers. “All employees of Dawoo Environment take each house or building as our own. We don’t just sweep the surfaces but give our hands to all niches and corners with eco-friendly detergents. Also, all employees must attend at least one training a month to maintain up-to-date cleaning information and excellent customer services.” Like its social enterprise title suggests, Dawoo Environment has been providing free cleaning services and training for local social organizations for many years. “Dawoo Environment is rather a cooperative than a company as many employees share the similar backgrounds.” When asked about future plan, Lee said that he would build a network with other social enterprises in a way to make a contribution to promoting regional economy.
