“I will spread the beauty of Korean ink-and-wash painting to the world”
Artist Yoon Jong-ho
Yoon enjoyed climbing since he was young. He loved wind, water, trees and birds singing. Naturally, many of his works are themed on nature. <Mureung Fall Binggye> is the one he loves the most among his works. He went to Kumgangsan Mountain for 3 times to see it and drew some other works of the mountain: <Guryeong Fall>, <Okryudam>, <Manmulsang Jeolbuam>, <Naekumgang Boduck Temple> and <Haekumgang>. One might imagine that the contents of nature such as water and rocks are alive when seeing these works. For this, Yoon used various expressive methods from balancing and heaviness to some traditional methods like ‘golbubyongpil’, ‘balmukbub’, ‘nongmook’ and ‘joongdammook’. Yoon started painting as hobby and took the road in earnest in his late age in 1992. In fact, he had a great talent in painting as some of his works were always hung on the walls of classroom or corridor when in elementary school. He was born to a large but humble family. He had to support the family by drawing commercial paintings from his early age. The career led to interior, design and advertising and eventually opening his office. He once had an employee who drew oriental painting and learned the skill from him after finishing the work. He also passed the qualification exams for middle and high schools by self-studying and entered Daegu University majoring in oriental painting. With excellent academic record, he moved onto his study at Graduate School of Yeungnam University and passed the course also with excellent record. He held his first solo exhibition at Yeungnam University Museum Art Face and wowed many art professors. In the group exhibition held at the Daebaek Gallery, his work <Binggye> and <Kokiribawi> surprised professor Kimwon and teacher Choi Jong-mo to say “What have we done until today (since his works are this much brilliant)?” When his other work <Kumgangsan> was displayed at an ink-and-wash painting exhibition, he received this praise “It will suffer nothing by comparison.” Yoon went down to Cheongdo County in 2005 to focus on his work in a quiet place. He bought a house there to use as his studio and also a 1,917 square meter field to grow vegetables as a way to keep his health. It is a great joy to work in watching the changes of nature in the day and the stars at night, says Yoon. He has so far drawn about 800 works. Quite recently, he started to add colors to the traditional black and white ink-and-wash painting. “Quality is more important than the number of work I create. For this reason, I pour my soul to each of my work” says Yoon. When asked about future direction of his work, he said “It seems that people prefer more colors than black and white. This might be the reason that Korean ink-and-wash painting is losing public interest. So, I will try to add more colors to my work in modern terms and I also would like to prove that Korean paper drawing is as good as western canvas drawing.” Meanwhile, Yoon is preparing for an exhibition wishing a successful PyeongChang 2018.
