A rising artist of Korean color painting!
Artist Kim Young-sun
Kim’s love of Korean paintings is enormous that she pours all her efforts in delivering Korean images with natural objects such as pines trees and flowers. The <Pine Scent> and <Fragrance> series are two good examples. “Pine trees have been loved by many Korean people for a long time. Koreans take the pine needles as a symbol of fidelity and the implication is still widely acceptable today. They also symbolize longevity and integrity of the nobles” says Kim. To these symbols, Kim adds her small wishes in the form of Korean paintings. The <Fragrance> on the Korean paper, on the other hand, delivers her simplicity. Starting with wash drawing, Kim shifted her style to color painting and to various styles today. Korean paintings are normally divided into three categories: ink-and-wash painting, wash drawing and color painting. The first emphasizes more on light and shade, the second on black ink in different level thickness and the third on coloring especially the ‘jinchaehwa (deep-color)’. Jinchaehwa is known to start since the Goryeo Kingdom but once was misunderstood as a Japanese art. “I have enormous love for ‘jinchaehwa’ and I pay a considerable amount of effort in the style. I also admire Chun Gyeong-ja (a Korean painter) who created her own formative style and unique art world. Personally, I’m working on decorative color painting with more emphasis on roughness than technique in order to realize its naturalness.” Kim is a mother of two twin daughters and is a school teacher. She was born in Jeju Island and started painting by joining a painting club at her middle school. She majored in art education at Jeju National University and she won the excellent prize in Korean painting and a runner-up prize in applied art at the Jeju Art Exhibition held by The Jejuilbo. She also won a special prize at the Korea Art Exhibition held by Hongik University and participated in Chungnam Art Exhibition and Chungnam Teacher’s Art Exhibition. Currently, she is a member of the Chungnam Woman’s Art Association which has 29 years of history since its first exhibition held at Cheonan Royal Gallery in 1989. She served as the president of the association during the years 2012 and 2013. “As a Korean and an artist, I am wishing the PyeongChang 2018 every success!”
Note: <Power Korea> “rewrites” the Korean article in English “concisely” for native English speakers and staff of foreign missions in Korea.
