"45 years of single path as a Korean landscape painter"
Artist Kim Ok-bae
The value of art is at a process to completion that takes many troubles and sufferings; and it is a fight against oneself. For this reason, the fruits harvested are but treasures of the artist; and I wish to share the fruits with people. – Artist’s note –
Kim is a Korean landscape painter. Although the composition of the objects is similar to the traditional style, the layout of the color is unique. She skillfully creates visual impacts by harmonizing valleys, falls and mountain ridges in deep and greenish ambience. When it comes to flowers, she boldly expresses them so that they look so natural as part of nature. It is interesting to know that she liked drawing manga when she was a child and mastered the skills by self-learning. “I was a daughter of a large family that could not afford me a tuition fee. I carried on the drawing nevertheless as hobby even after I married. And I soon realized that I found a greater pleasure in Korean landscape painting because watching the tranquil landscape made me feel really good; and I was awed by nature that repeats the circle of life without man’s interfering” says Kim. Kim and her husband liked traveling and they made traveled all over the country in order to find inspiration. Strange to feel that the landscape they saw found a new vitality when it turned to a work, remembers Kim. This in fact brought her self-confidence in terms of the style and she tested it in the 2003 Korea International Art Exhibition in which she never imagined that her work would bring her the top prize. Encouraged by this, she pushed forward her zeal for more exhibitions and competitions and won a number of notable prizes including the grand prizes at the 2004 Korea Art Exhibition and the China-Korea Changchun Art Exhibition. Kim is unique in her style that the common objects used in traditional paintings such as rooster, tiger, crane and peacock are called as ‘Kim’s style’. “Thankfully, people express their feeling of comfort after watching my works despite the works are somewhat different from neither tradition nor modernism. One reason might ascribes to the fact that I removes the image of a fierce tiger but renders it moderately instead.” Recognizing the uniqueness, Hunchun Culture & Art University Museum, Yanbian University Museum and Yanji University Museum in China are housing the works and some are also being housed in various organizational buildings of Samcheok City including the city hall. It is also notable that she received a Paris mayor’s prize for expressing a uniqueness of Korean painting. Meanwhile, Kim is running a Korean landscape painting class at Samcheock Lifelong Learning Center and teaching students the skills and helps them prepare for exhibitions. In 2006, she opened ‘Hyejeong Oriental Painting Institute’ and in 2009 listed her name as a master traditional Korean landscape painting. Kim served as an operation committee member of World Art Festival for Successful Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang where 15 of her pupils also displayed their works. Kim said that she would keep doing her best to promote beautiful Korean landscape painting to the world.
