Tongyeong City was the center of the navy during the Joseon Dynasty, and had active human and material exchanges with Seoul. Tongyeong is called the Naples of Korea and has many tourist resources that take advantage of its location surrounded by 570 islands, and has recently emerged as a hot spot for night tourism.

Tongyeong is the birthplace of famous musicians, painters, and writers such as Yun Isang, Jeon Hyeok-rim, and Park Kyung-ni. The city was selected as a Creative City of Music by UNESCO in 2015.
